brahmeti hovāca brahmaṇo vā etadvijaye mahīyadhvamiti tato haiva vidāñcakāra brahmeti ॥ 1 ॥
sā brahmeti hovāca ha kila brahmaṇaḥ vai īśvarasyaiva vijaye — īśvareṇaiva jitā asurāḥ । yūyaṁ tatra nimittamātram । tasyaiva vijaye — yūyaṁ mahīyadhvaṁ mahimānaṁ prāpnutha । etaditi kriyāviśeṣaṇārtham । mithyābhimānastu yuṣmākam — asmākamevāyaṁ vijayo'smākamevāyaṁ mahimeti । tataḥ tasmādumāvākyāt ha eva vidāñcakāra brahmeti indraḥ ; avadhāraṇāt tato haiva iti, na svātantryeṇa ॥
tasmādvā ete devā atitarāmivānyāndevānyadagnirvāyurindraste hyenannediṣṭhaṁ pasparśuste hyenatprathamo vidāñcakāra brahmeti ॥ 2 ॥
yasmādagnivāyvindrā ete devā brahmaṇaḥ saṁvādadarśanādinā sāmīpyamupagatāḥ, tasmāt svairguṇaiḥ atitarāmiva śaktiguṇādimahābhāgyaiḥ anyān devān atitarām atiśerata iva ete devāḥ । ivaśabdo'narthako'vadhāraṇārtho vā । yat agniḥ vāyuḥ indraḥ te hi devā yasmāt enat brahma nediṣṭham antikatamaṁ priyatamaṁ pasparśuḥ spṛṣṭavanto yathoktairbrahmaṇaḥ saṁvādādiprakāraiḥ, te hi yasmācca hetoḥ enat brahma prathamaḥ prathamāḥ pradhānāḥ santa ityetat , vidāñcakāra vidāñcakrurityetat , brahmeti ॥
tasmādvā indro'titarāmivānyāndevānsa hyenannediṣṭhaṁ pasparśa sa hyenatprathamo vidāñcakāra brahmeti ॥ 3 ॥
yasmādagnivāyū api indravākyādeva vidāñcakratuḥ, indreṇa hi umāvākyātprathamaṁ śrutaṁ brahmeti ; tasmādvai indraḥ atitarāmiva atiśeta iva anyān devān । sa hyenannediṣṭhaṁ pasparśa yasmāt sa hyenatprathamo vidāñcakāra brahmetyuktārthaṁ vākyam ॥
tasyaiṣa ādeśo yadetadvidyuto vyadyutadā3 itīnnyamīmiṣadā3 ityadhidaivatam ॥ 4 ॥
tasya prakṛtasya brahmaṇaḥ eṣaḥ ādeśaḥ upamopadeśaḥ । nirupamasya brahmaṇo yenopamānenopadeśaḥ so'yamādeśa ityucyate । kiṁ tat ? yadetat prasiddhaṁ loke vidyutaḥ vyadyutat vidyotanaṁ kṛtavadityetadanupapannamiti vidyuto vidyotanamiti kalpyate । ā3 ityupamārthaḥ । vidyuto vidyotanamivetyarthaḥ,
‘yathā sakṛdvidyutam’ (bṛ. u. 2 । 3 । 6) iti śrutyantare ca darśanāt । vidyudiva hi sakṛdātmānaṁ darśayitvā tirobhūtaṁ brahma devebhyaḥ । athavā vidyutaḥ ‘tejaḥ’ ityadhyāhāryam । vyadyutat vidyotitavat ā3 iva । vidyutastejaḥ sakṛdvidyotitavadivetyabhiprāyaḥ । itiśabdaḥ ādeśapratinirdeśārthaḥ — ityayamādeśa iti । icchabdaḥ samuccayārthaḥ । ayaṁ cāparastasyādeśaḥ । ko'sau ? nyamīmiṣat yathā cakṣuḥ । nyamīmiṣat nimeṣaṁ kṛtavat । svārthe ṇic । upamārtha eva ākāraḥ । cakṣuṣo viṣayaṁ prati prakāśatirobhāva iva cetyarthaḥ । iti adhidaivataṁ devatāviṣayaṁ brahmaṇa upamānadarśanam ॥
athādhyātmaṁ yadetadgacchatīva ca mano'nena caitadupasmaratyabhīkṣṇaṁ saṅkalpaḥ ॥ 5 ॥
atha anantaram adhyātmaṁ pratyagātmaviṣaya ādeśa ucyate । yadetat gacchatīva ca manaḥ । etadbrahma ḍhaukata iva viṣayīkarotīva । yacca anena manasā etat brahma upasmarati samīpataḥ smarati sādhakaḥ abhīkṣṇaṁ bhṛśam । saṅkalpaśca manaso brahmaviṣayaḥ । manaupādhikatvāddhi manasaḥ saṅkalpasmṛtyādipratyayairabhivyajyate brahma, viṣayīkriyamāṇamiva । ataḥ sa eṣa brahmaṇo'dhyātmamādeśaḥ । vidyunnimeṣaṇavadadhidaivataṁ drutaprakāśanadharmi, adhyātmaṁ ca manaḥpratyayasamakālābhivyaktidharmi, ityeṣa ādeśaḥ । evamādiśyamānaṁ hi brahma mandabuddhigamyaṁ bhavatīti brahmaṇa ādeśa upadeśaḥ । na hi nirupādhikameva brahma mandabuddhibhirākalayituṁ śakyam ॥
taddha tadvanaṁ nāma tadvanamityupāsitavyaṁ sa ya etadevaṁ vedābhi hainaṁ sarvāṇi bhūtāni saṁvāñchanti ॥ 6 ॥
kiñca, tat brahma ha kila tadvanaṁ nāma tasya vanaṁ tadvanaṁ tasya prāṇijātasya pratyagātmabhūtatvādvanaṁ vananīyaṁ sambhajanīyam । ataḥ tadvanaṁ nāma ; prakhyātaṁ brahma tadvanamiti yataḥ, tasmāt tadvanamiti anenaiva guṇābhidhānena upāsitavyaṁ cintanīyam । anena nāmnopāsanasya phalamāha — sa yaḥ kaścit etat yathoktaṁ brahma evaṁ yathoktaguṇaṁ veda upāste abhi ha enam upāsakaṁ sarvāṇi bhūtāni abhi saṁvāñchanti ha prārthayanta eva yathā brahma ॥
upaniṣadaṁ bho brūhītyuktā ta upaniṣadbrāhmīṁ vāva ta upaniṣadamabrūmeti ॥ 7 ॥
evamanuśiṣṭaḥ śiṣya ācāryamuvāca — upaniṣadaṁ rahasyaṁ yaccintyaṁ bho bhagavan brūhi iti । evamuktavati śiṣye āhācāryaḥ — uktā abhihitā te tava upaniṣat । kā punaḥ setyāha — brāhmīṁ brahmaṇaḥ paramātmana iyaṁ brāhmī tām , paramātmaviṣayatvādatītavijñānasya, vāva eva te upaniṣadamabrūmeti uktāmeva paramātmaviṣayāmupaniṣadamabrūmetyavadhārayatyuttarārtham । paramātmaviṣayāmupaniṣadaṁ śrutavataḥ upaniṣadaṁ bho brūhīti pṛcchataḥ śiṣyasya ko'bhiprāyaḥ ? yadi tāvacchrutasyārthasya praśnaḥ kṛtaḥ, tataḥ piṣṭapeṣaṇavatpunarukto'narthakaḥ praśnaḥ syāt । atha sāvaśeṣoktopaniṣatsyāt , tatastasyāḥ phalavacanenopasaṁhāro na yuktaḥ
‘pretyāsmāllokādamṛtā bhavanti’ (ke. u. 2 । 5) iti । tasmāduktopaniṣaccheṣaviṣayo'pi praśno'nupapanna eva, anavaśeṣitatvāt । kastarhyabhiprāyaḥ praṣṭuriti । ucyate । kiṁ pūrvoktopaniṣaccheṣatayā tatsahakārisādhanāntarāpekṣā, atha nirapekṣaiva ? sāpekṣā cedapekṣitaviṣayāmupaniṣadaṁ brūhi । atha nirapekṣā cedavadhāraya pippalādavannātaḥ paramastītyevamabhiprāyaḥ । etadupapannamācāryasyāvadhāraṇavacanam ‘uktā ta upaniṣat’ iti । nanu nāvadhāraṇamidam , yato'nyadvaktavyamāha
‘tasyai tapo damaḥ’ (ke. u. 4 । 8) ityādi । satyam , vaktavyamucyate ācāryeṇa । na tūktopaniṣaccheṣatayā tatsahakārisādhanāntarābhiprāyeṇa vā ; kintu brahmavidyāprāptyupāyābhiprāyeṇa vedaistadaṅgaiśca sahapāṭhena samīkaraṇāttapaḥprabhṛtīnām । na hi vedānāṁ śikṣādyaṅgānāṁ ca sākṣādbrahmavidyāśeṣatvaṁ tatsahakārisādhanatvaṁ vā sambhavati । sahapaṭhitānāmapi yathāyogaṁ vibhajya viniyogaḥ syāditi cet ; yathā sūktavākānumantraṇamantrāṇāṁ yathādaivataṁ vibhāgaḥ, tathā tapodamakarmasatyādīnāmapi brahmavidyāśeṣatvaṁ tatsahakārisādhanatvaṁ veti kalpyate । vedānāṁ tadaṅgānāṁ cārthaprakāśakatvena karmātmajñānopāyatvamityevaṁ hyayaṁ vibhāgo yujyate arthasambandhopapattisāmarthyāditi cet , na ; ayukteḥ । na hyayaṁ vibhāgo ghaṭanāṁ prāñcati । na hi sarvakriyākārakaphalabhedabuddhitiraskāriṇyā brahmavidyāyāḥ śeṣāpekṣā sahakārisādhanasambandho vā yujyate । sarvaviṣayavyāvṛttapratyagātmaviṣayaniṣṭhatvācca brahmavidyāyāstatphalasya ca niḥśreyasasya ।
‘mokṣamicchansadā karma tyajedeva sasādhanam । tyajataiva hi tajjñeyaṁ tyaktuḥ pratyakparaṁ padam’ ( ? ) tasmātkarmaṇāṁ sahakāritvaṁ karmaśeṣāpekṣā vā na jñānasyopapadyate । tato'sadeva sūktavākānumantraṇavadyathāyogaṁ vibhāga iti । tasmādavadhāraṇārthataiva praśnaprativacanasyopapadyate । etāvatyeveyamupaniṣaduktānyanirapekṣā amṛtatvāya ॥
tasyai tapo damaḥ karmeti pratiṣṭhā vedāḥ sarvāṅgāni satyamāyatanam ॥ 8 ॥
yāmimāṁ brāhmīmupaniṣadaṁ tavāgre'brūmeti tasyai tasyā uktāyā upaniṣadaḥ prāptyupāyabhūtāni tapaādīni । tapaḥ kāyendriyamanasāṁ samādhānam । damaḥ upaśamaḥ । karma agnihotrādi । etairhi saṁskṛtasya sattvaśuddhidvārā tattvajñānotpattirdṛṣṭā । dṛṣṭā hyamṛditakalmaṣasyokte'pi brahmaṇyapratipattirviparītapratipattiśca, yathendravirocanaprabhṛtīnām । tasmādiha vātīteṣu vā bahuṣu janmāntareṣu tapaādibhiḥ kṛtasattvaśuddherjñānaṁ samutpadyate yathāśrutam ;
‘yasya deve parā bhaktiryathā deve tathā gurau । tasyaite kathitā hyarthāḥ prakāśante mahātmanaḥ’ (śve. u. 6 । 23) iti mantravarṇāt ।
‘jñānamutpadyate puṁsāṁ kṣayātpāpasya karmaṇaḥ’ (mo. 204 । 8) iti smṛteśca । itiśabdaḥ upalakṣaṇatvapradarśanārthaḥ । iti evamādyanyadapi jñānotpatterupakārakam
‘amānitvamadambhitvam’ (bha. gī. 13 । 7) ityādyupadarśitaṁ bhavati । pratiṣṭhā pādau pādāvivāsyāḥ ; teṣu hi satsu pratitiṣṭhati brahmavidyā pravartate, padbhyāmiva puruṣaḥ । vedāścatvāraḥ sarvāṇi cāṅgāni śikṣādīni ṣaṭ karmajñānaprakāśakatvādvedānāṁ tadrakṣaṇārthatvādaṅgānāṁ pratiṣṭhātvam । athavā, pratiṣṭhāśabdasya pādarūpakalpanārthatvādvedāstvitarāṇi sarvāṅgāni śiraādīni । asminpakṣe śikṣādīnāṁ vedagrahaṇenaiva grahaṇaṁ kṛtaṁ pratyetavyam । aṅgini hi gṛhīte'ṅgāni gṛhītānyeva bhavanti, tadāyattatvādaṅgānām । satyam āyatanaṁ yatra tiṣṭhatyupaniṣat tadāyatanam । satyamiti amāyitā akauṭilyaṁ vāṅmanaḥkāyānām । teṣu hyāśrayati vidyā ye amāyāvinaḥ sādhavaḥ, nāsuraprakṛtiṣu māyāviṣu ;
‘na yeṣu jihmamanṛtaṁ na māyā ca’ (pra. u. 1 । 16) iti śruteḥ । tasmātsatyamāyatanamiti kalpyate । tapaādiṣveva pratiṣṭhātvena prāptasya satyasya punarāyatanatvena grahaṇaṁ sādhanātiśayatvajñāpanārtham ।
‘aśvamedhasahasraṁ ca satyaṁ ca tulayā dhṛtam । aśvamedhasahasrācca satyamekaṁ viśiṣyate’ (mahābhā. ā. 74 । 103) iti smṛteḥ ॥
yo vā etāmevaṁ vedāpahatya pāpmānamanante svarge loke jyeye pratitiṣṭhati pratitiṣṭhati ॥ 9 ॥
yo vai etāṁ brahmavidyām
‘keneṣitam’ (ke. u. 1 । 1) ityādinā yathoktām evaṁ mahābhāgām
‘brahma ha devebhyaḥ’ (ke. u. 3 । 1) ityādinā stutāṁ sarvavidyāpratiṣṭhāṁ veda ।
‘amṛtatvaṁ hi vindate’ (ke. u. 2 । 4) ityuktamapi brahmavidyāphalamante nigamayati — apahatya pāpmānam avidyākāmakarmalakṣaṇaṁ saṁsārabījaṁ vidhūya anante aparyante svarge loke sukhātmake brahmaṇītyetat । anante iti viśeṣaṇānna triviṣṭape anantaśabda aupacāriko'pi syādityata āha — jyeye iti । jyeye jyāyasi sarvamahattare svātmani mukhye eva pratitiṣṭhati । na punaḥ saṁsāramāpadyata ityabhiprāyaḥ ॥
iti caturthakhaṇḍabhāṣyam ॥
