parāñci khāni vyatṛṇatsvayambhūstasmātparāṅ paśyati nāntarātman ।
kaściddhīraḥ pratyagātmānamaikṣadāvṛttacakṣuramṛtatvamicchan ॥ 1 ॥
parāñci parāgañcanti gacchantīti, khāni khopalakṣitāni śrotrādīnīndriyāṇi khānītyucyante । tāni parāñcyeva śabdādiviṣayaprakāśanāya pravartante । yasmādevaṁsvabhāvakāni tāni vyatṛṇat hiṁsitavān hananaṁ kṛtavānityarthaḥ । ko'sau ? svayambhūḥ parameśvaraḥ svayameva svatantro bhavati sarvadā na paratantra iti । tasmāt parāṅ parāgrūpānanātmabhūtāñśabdādīn paśyati upalabhate upalabdhā nāntarātman nāntarātmānamityarthaḥ । evaṁsvabhāve'pi sati lokasya kaścit nadyāḥ pratisrotaḥpravartanamiva dhīraḥ dhīmānvivekī pratyagātmānaṁ pratyak cāsāvātmā ceti pratyagātmā । pratīcyevātmaśabdo rūḍho loke, nānyatra । vyutpattipakṣe'pi tatraivātmaśabdo vartate ; ‘yaccāpnoti yadādatte yaccātti viṣayāniha । yaccāsya santato bhāvastasmādātmeti kīrtyate’ ; ityātmaśabdavyutpattismaraṇāt । taṁ pratyagātmānaṁ svasvabhāvam aikṣat apaśyat paśyatītyarthaḥ, chandasi kālāniyamāt । kathaṁ paśyatīti, ucyate — āvṛttacakṣuḥ āvṛttaṁ vyāvṛttaṁ cakṣuḥ śrotrādikamindriyajātamaśeṣaviṣayāt yasya sa āvṛttacakṣuḥ । sa evaṁ saṁskṛtaḥ pratyagātmānaṁ paśyati । na hi bāhyaviṣayālocanaparatvaṁ pratyagātmekṣaṇaṁ caikasya sambhavati । kimicchanpunaritthaṁ mahatā prayāsena svabhāvapravṛttinirodhaṁ kṛtvā dhīraḥ pratyagātmānaṁ paśyatīti, ucyate । amṛtatvam amaraṇadharmatvaṁ nityasvabhāvatām icchan ātmana ityarthaḥ ॥
parācaḥ kāmānanuyanti bālāste mṛtyoryanti vitatasya pāśam ।
atha dhīrā amṛtatvaṁ viditvā dhruvamadhruveṣviha na prārthayante ॥ 2 ॥
yattāvatsvābhāvikaṁ parāgevānātmadarśanaṁ tadātmadarśanasya pratibandhakāraṇamavidyā tatpratikūlatvādyā ca parāgevāvidyopapradarśiteṣu dṛṣṭādṛṣṭeṣu bhogeṣu tṛṣṇā tābhyāmavidyātṛṣṇābhyāṁ pratibaddhātmadarśanāḥ parācaḥ bahirgatāneva kāmān kāmyānviṣayān anuyanti anugacchanti bālāḥ alpaprajñāḥ te tena kāraṇena mṛtyoḥ avidyākāmakarmasamudāyasya yanti gacchanti vitatasya vistīrṇasya sarvato vyāptasya pāśaṁ pāśyate badhyate yena taṁ pāśaṁ dehendriyādisaṁyogaviyogalakṣaṇam । anavarataṁ janmamaraṇajarārogādyanekānarthavrātaṁ pratipadyanta ityarthaḥ । yata evam atha tasmāt dhīrāḥ vivekinaḥ pratyagātmasvarūpāvasthānalakṣaṇam amṛtatvaṁ dhruvaṁ viditvā । devādyamṛtatvaṁ hyadhruvam , idaṁ tu pratyagātmasvarūpāvasthānalakṣaṇaṁ dhruvam , ‘na karmaṇā vardhate no kanīyān’ iti śruteḥ । tadevaṁbhūtaṁ kūṭasthamavicālyamamṛtatvaṁ viditvā adhruveṣu sarvapadārtheṣu anityeṣu nirdhārya, brāhmaṇā iha saṁsāre'narthaprāye na prārthayante kiñcidapi pratyagātmadarśanapratikūlatvāt । putravittalokaiṣaṇābhyo vyuttiṣṭhantyevetyabhiprāyaḥ ॥
yena rūpaṁ rasaṁ gandhaṁ śabdānsparśāṁśca maithunān ।
etenaiva vijānāti kimatra pariśiṣyate । etadvai tat ॥ 3 ॥
yadvijñānānna kiñcidanyatprārthayante brāhmaṇāḥ, kathaṁ tadadhigama iti, ucyate — yena vijñānasvabhāvenātmanā rūpaṁ rasaṁ gandhaṁ śabdān sparśāṁśca maithunān maithunanimittānsukhapratyayān vijānāti vispaṣṭaṁ jānāti sarvo lokaḥ । nanu naivaṁ prasiddhirlokasya ātmanā dehādivilakṣaṇenāhaṁ vijānāmīti । dehādisaṅghāto'haṁ vijānāmīti tu sarvo loko'vagacchati । nanu dehādisaṅghātasyāpi śabdādisvarūpatvāviśeṣādvijñeyatvāviśeṣācca na yuktaṁ vijñātṛtvam । yadi hi dehādisaṅghāto rūpādyātmakaḥ san rūpādīnvijānīyāt , tarhi bāhyā api rūpādayo'nyonyaṁ svaṁ svaṁ rūpaṁ ca vijānīyuḥ । na caitadasti । tasmāddehādilakṣaṇāṁśca rūpādīn etenaiva dehādivyatiriktenaiva vijñānasvabhāvenātmanā vijānāti lokaḥ । yathā yena loho dahati so'gniriti tadvat ātmano'vijñeyam । kim atra asmiṁlloke pariśiṣyate na kiñcitpariśiṣyate sarvameva tvātmanā vijñeyam , yasyātmano'vijñeyaṁ na kiñcitpariśiṣyate, sa ātmā sarvajñaḥ । etadvai tat । kiṁ tat yannaciketasā pṛṣṭaṁ devādibhirapi vicikitsitaṁ dharmādibhyo'nyat viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padaṁ yasmātparaṁ nāsti tadvai etat adhigatamityarthaḥ ॥
svapnāntaṁ jāgaritāntaṁ cobhau yenānupaśyati ।
mahāntaṁ vibhumātmānaṁ matvā dhīro na śocati ॥ 4 ॥
atisūkṣmatvāddurvijñeyamiti matvaitamevārthaṁ punaḥ punarāha — svapnāntaṁ svapnamadhyaṁ svapnavijñeyamityetat । tathā jāgaritāntaṁ jāgaritamadhyaṁ jāgaritavijñeyaṁ ca । ubhau svapnajāgaritāntau yena ātmanā anupaśyati lokaḥ iti sarvaṁ pūrvavat । taṁ mahāntaṁ vibhumātmānaṁ matvā avagamyātmabhāvena sākṣādahamasmi paramātmeti dhīraḥ na śocati ॥
ya imaṁ madhvadaṁ veda ātmānaṁ jīvamantikāt ।
īśānaṁ bhūtabhavyasya na tato vijugupsate । etadvai tat ॥ 5 ॥
kiñca, yaḥ kaścit imaṁ madhvadaṁ karmaphalabhujaṁ jīvaṁ prāṇādikalāpasya dhārayitāramātmānaṁ veda vijānāti antikāt antike samīpe īśānam īśitāraṁ bhūtabhavyasya kālatrayasya, tataḥ tadvijñānādūrdhvamātmānaṁ na vijugupsate na gopāyitumicchati, abhayaprāptatvāt । yāvaddhi bhayamadhyastho'nityamātmānaṁ manyate tāvadgopāyitumicchatyātmānam । yadā tu nityamadvaitamātmānaṁ vijānāti, tadā kaḥ kiṁ kuto vā gopāyitumicchet । etadvai taditi pūrvavat ॥
yaḥ pūrvaṁ tapaso jātamadbhyaḥ pūrvamajāyata ।
guhāṁ praviśya tiṣṭhantaṁ yo bhūtebhirvyapaśyata । etadvai tat ॥ 6 ॥
yaḥ pratyagātmeśvarabhāvena nirdiṣṭaḥ, sa sarvātmetyetaddarśayati — yaḥ kaścinmumukṣuḥ pūrvaṁ prathamaṁ tapasaḥ jñānādilakṣaṇādbrahmaṇa ityetat ; jātam utpannaṁ hiraṇyagarbham । kimapekṣya pūrvamiti, āha — adbhyaḥ pūrvam apsahitebhyaḥ pañcabhūtebhyaḥ, na kevalābhyo'dbhya ityabhiprāyaḥ । ajāyata utpannaḥ yastaṁ prathamajaṁ devādiśarīrāṇyutpādya sarvaprāṇiguhāṁ hṛdayākāśaṁ praviśya tiṣṭhantaṁ śabdādīnupalabhamānaṁ bhūtebhiḥ bhūtaiḥ kāryakaraṇalakṣaṇaiḥ saha tiṣṭhantaṁ yo vyapaśyata yaḥ paśyatītyetat ; ya evaṁ paśyati, sa etadeva paśyati — yattatprakṛtaṁ brahma ॥
yā prāṇena sambhavati aditirdevatāmayī ।
guhāṁ praviśya tiṣṭhantīṁ yā bhūtebhirvyajāyata । etadvai tat ॥ 7 ॥
kiñca, yā sarvadevatāmayī sarvadevatātmikā prāṇena hiraṇyagarbharūpeṇa parasmādbrahmaṇaḥ sambhavati śabdādīnāmadanāt aditiḥ tāṁ pūrvavadguhāṁ praviśya tiṣṭhantīm aditim । tāmeva viśinaṣṭi — yā bhūtebhiḥ bhūtaiḥ samanvitā vyajāyata utpannetyetat ॥
araṇyornirhito jātavedā garbha iva subhṛto garbhiṇībhiḥ ।
dive diva īḍyo jāgṛvadbhirhaviṣmadbhirmanuṣyebhiragniḥ । etadvai tat ॥ 8 ॥
kiñca, yaḥ adhiyajñam uttarādharāraṇyornihitaḥ sthitaḥ jātavedā agniḥ punaḥ sarvahaviṣāṁ bhoktā adhyātmaṁ ca yogibhiḥ, garbha iva garbhiṇībhiḥ antarvatnībhiragarhitānnabhojanādinā yathā garbhaḥ subhṛtaḥ suṣṭhu samyagbhṛto loke, itthameva ṛtvigbhiryogibhiśca subhṛta ityetat । kiñca, dive dive ahanyahani īḍyaḥ stutyo vandyaśca karmibhiryogibhiścādhvare hṛdaye ca jāgṛvadbhiḥ jāgaraṇaśīlaiḥ apramattairityetat । haviṣmadbhiḥ ājyādimadbhiḥ dhyānabhāvanāvadbhiśca manuṣyebhiḥ manuṣyaiḥ agniḥ ; etadvai tat tadeva prakṛtaṁ brahma ॥
yataścodeti sūryaḥ astaṁ yatra ca gacchati ।
taṁ devāḥ sarve arpitāstadu nātyeti kaścana । etadvai tat ॥ 9 ॥
kiñca, yataśca yasmātprāṇāt udeti uttiṣṭhati sūryaḥ, astaṁ nimlocanaṁ tirodhānaṁ yatra yasminneva ca prāṇe ahanyahani gacchati, taṁ prāṇamātmānaṁ devāḥ sarve agnyādayaḥ adhidaivaṁ vāgādayaścādhyātmaṁ sarve viśve arā iva rathanābhau arpitāḥ sampraveśitāḥ sthitikāle । so'pi brahmaiva । tat etatsarvātmakaṁ brahma, u nātyeti nātītya tadātmakatāṁ tadanyatvaṁ gacchati, kaścana kaścidapi etadvai tat ॥
yadeveha tadamutra yadamutra tadanviha ।
mṛtyoḥ sa mṛtyumāpnoti ya iha nāneva paśyati ॥ 10 ॥
yadbrahmādisthāvarānteṣu vartamānaṁ tattadupādhitvādabrahmavadavabhāsamānaṁ saṁsāryanyatparasmādbrahmaṇa iti mā bhūtkasyacidāśaṅketīdamāha — yadeveha kāryakāraṇopādhisamanvitaṁ saṁsāradharmavadavabhāsamānamavivekinām , tadeva svātmastham amutra nityavijñānaghanasvabhāvaṁ sarvasaṁsāradharmavarjitaṁ brahma । yacca amutra amuṣminnātmani sthitam , tadanu iha tadeva iha kāryakaraṇanāmarūpopādhim anu vibhāvyamānaṁ nānyat । tatraivaṁ sati upādhisvabhāvabhedadṛṣṭilakṣaṇayā avidyayā mohitaḥ san ya iha brahmaṇyanānābhūte parasmādanyo'haṁ matto'nyatparaṁ brahmeti nāneva bhinnamiva paśyati upalabhate, sa mṛtyormaraṇāt mṛtyuṁ maraṇaṁ punaḥ punaḥ jananamaraṇabhāvamāpnoti pratipadyate । tasmāttathā na paśyet । vijñānaikarasaṁ nairantaryeṇākāśavatparipūrṇaṁ brahmaivāhamasmīti paśyediti vākyārthaḥ ॥
manasaivedamāptavyaṁ neha nānāsti kiñcana ।
mṛtyoḥ sa mṛtyuṁ gacchati ya iha nāneva paśyati ॥ 11 ॥
prāgekatvavijñānādācāryāgamasaṁskṛtena manasaiva idaṁ brahmaikarasam āptavyam ātmaiva nānyadastīti । āpte ca nānātvapratyupasthāpikāyā avidyāyā nivṛttatvāt iha brahmaṇi nānā nāsti kiñcana aṇumātramapi । yastu punaravidyātimiradṛṣṭiṁ na muñcati iha brahmaṇi nāneva paśyati, sa mṛtyormṛtyuṁ gacchatyeva svalpamapi bhedamadhyāropayannityarthaḥ ॥
aṅguṣṭhamātraḥ puruṣo madhya ātmani tiṣṭhati ।
īśānaṁ bhūtabhavyasya na tato vijugupsate । etadvai tat ॥ 12 ॥
punarapi tadeva prakṛtaṁ brahmāha — aṅguṣṭhamātraḥ aṅguṣṭhaparimāṇaḥ । aṅguṣṭhaparimāṇaṁ hṛdayapuṇḍarīkaṁ tacchidravartyantaḥkaraṇopādhiraṅguṣṭhamātraḥ aṅguṣṭhamātravaṁśaparvamadhyavartyambaravat । puruṣaḥ pūrṇamanena sarvamiti । madhye ātmani śarīre tiṣṭhati yaḥ tam ātmānam īśānaṁ bhūtabhavyasya viditvā, na tata ityādi pūrvavat ॥
aṅguṣṭhamātraḥ puruṣo jyotirivādhūmakaḥ ।
īśāno bhūtabhavyasya sa evādya sa u śvaḥ । etadvai tat ॥ 13 ॥
kiñca, aṅguṣṭhamātraḥ puruṣaḥ jyotiriva adhūmakaḥ, adhūmakamiti yuktaṁ jyotiḥparatvāt । yastvevaṁ lakṣito yogibhirhṛdaye īśānaḥ bhūtabhavyasya sa eva nityaḥ kūṭasthaḥ adya idānīṁ prāṇiṣu vartamānaḥ sa u śvo'pi vartiṣyate, nānyastatsamo'nyaśca janiṣyata ityarthaḥ । anena
‘nāyamastīti caike’ (ka. u. 1 । 1 । 20) ityayaṁ pakṣo nyāyato'prāpto'pi svavacanena śrutyā pratyuktaḥ, tathā kṣaṇabhaṅgavādaśca ।
yathodakaṁ durge vṛṣṭaṁ parvateṣu vidhāvati ।
evaṁ dharmānpṛthakpaśyaṁstānevānuvidhāvati ॥ 14 ॥
punarapi bhedadarśanāpavādaṁ brahmaṇa āha — yathā udakaṁ durge durgame deśe ucchrite vṛṣṭaṁ siktaṁ parvateṣu parvavatsu nimnapradeśeṣu vidhāvati vikīrṇaṁ sadvinaśyati, evaṁ dharmān ātmano'bhinnān pṛthak paśyan pṛthageva pratiśarīraṁ paśyan tāneva śarīrabhedānuvartinaḥ anuvidhāvati । śarīrabhedameva pṛthak punaḥ punaḥ pratipadyata ityarthaḥ ॥
yathodakaṁ śuddhe śuddhamāsiktaṁ tādṛgeva bhavati । evaṁ munervijānata ātmā bhavati gautama ॥ 15 ॥
asya punarvidyāvato vidhvastopādhikṛtabhedadarśanasya viśuddhavijñānaghanaikarasamadvayamātmānaṁ paśyato vijānato munermananaśīlasyātmasvarūpaṁ kathaṁ sambhavatīti, ucyate — yathā udakaṁ śuddhe prasanne śuddhaṁ prasannam āsiktaṁ prakṣiptam ekarasameva nānyathā, tādṛgeva bhavati ātmāpyevameva bhavati ekatvaṁ vijānato muneḥ mananaśīlasya he gautama । tasmātkutārkikabhedadṛṣṭiṁ nāstikakudṛṣṭiṁ cojjhitvā mātṛpitṛsahasrebhyo'pi hitaiṣiṇā vedenopadiṣṭamātmaikatvadarśanaṁ śāntadarpairādaraṇīyamityarthaḥ ॥
iti caturthavallībhāṣyam ॥
puramekādaśadvāramajasyāvakracetasaḥ ।
anuṣṭhāya na śocati vimuktaśca vimucyate । etadvai tat ॥ 1 ॥
punarapi prakārāntareṇa brahmatattvanirdhāraṇārtho'yamārambhaḥ, durvijñeyatvādbrahmaṇaḥ — puraṁ puramiva puram । dvāradvārapālādhiṣṭhātrādyanekapuropakaraṇasampattidarśanāt śarīraṁ puram । puraṁ ca sopakaraṇaṁ svātmanā asaṁhatasvatantrasvāmyarthaṁ dṛṣṭam । tathedaṁ purasāmānyādanekopakaraṇasaṁhataṁ śarīraṁ svātmanā asaṁhatarājasthānīyasvāmyarthaṁ bhavitumarhati । taccedaṁ śarīrākhyaṁ puram ekādaśadvāram ; ekādaśa dvārāṇyasya — sapta śīrṣaṇyāni, nābhyā sahārvāñci trīṇi, śirasyekam , tairekādaśadvāraṁ puram । kasya ? ajasya janmādivikriyārahitasyātmano rājasthānīyasya puradharmavilakṣaṇasya । avakracetasaḥ avakram akuṭilamādityaprakāśavannityamevāvasthitamekarūpaṁ ceto vijñānamasyeti avakracetāḥ tasyāvakracetasaḥ rājasthānīyasya brahmaṇaḥ yasyedaṁ puraṁ taṁ parameśvaraṁ purasvāminam anuṣṭhāya dhyātvā । dhyānaṁ hi tasyānuṣṭhānaṁ samyagvijñānapūrvakam । taṁ sarvaiṣaṇāvinirmuktaḥ sansamaṁ sarvabhūtasthaṁ dhyātvā na śocati । tadvijñānādabhayaprāpteḥ śokāvasarābhāvātkuto bhayekṣā । ihaivāvidyākṛtakāmakarmabandhanairvimukto bhavati । vimuktaśca sanvimucyate ; punaḥ śarīraṁ na gṛhṇātītyarthaḥ ॥
haṁsaḥ śuciṣadvasurantarikṣasaddhotā vediṣadatithirduroṇasat ।
nṛṣadvarasadṛtasadvyomasadabjā gojā ṛtajā adrijā ṛtaṁ bṛhat ॥ 2 ॥
sa tu naikapuravartyevātmā kiṁ tarhi sarvapuravartī । katham ? haṁsaḥ hanti gacchatīti । śuciṣat śucau divi ādityātmanā sīdatīti । vasuḥ vāsayati sarvāniti । vāyvātmanā antarikṣe sīdatīti antarikṣasat । hotā agniḥ, ‘agnirvai hotā’ iti śruteḥ । vedyāṁ pṛthivyāṁ sīdatīti vediṣat , ‘iyaṁ vediḥ paro'ntaḥ pṛthivyāḥ’ (ṛ. maṁ. 1 । 22 । 164 । 35) iti mantravarṇāt । atithiḥ somaḥ san duroṇe kalaśe sīdatīti duroṇasat । brāhmaṇo'tithirūpeṇa vā duroṇeṣu gṛheṣu sīdatīti duroṇasat । nṛṣat nṛṣu manuṣyeṣu sīdatīti nṛṣat । varasat vareṣu deveṣu sīdatīti varasat । ṛtasat ṛtaṁ satyaṁ yajño vā, tasmin sīdatīti ṛtasat । vyomasat vyomni ākāśe sīdatīti vyomasat । abjāḥ apsu śaṅkhaśuktimakarādirupeṇa jāyata iti abjāḥ । gojāḥ gavi pṛthivyāṁ vrīhiyavādirūpeṇa jāyata iti gojāḥ । ṛtajāḥ yajñāṅgarūpeṇa jāyata iti ṛtajāḥ । adrijāḥ parvatebhyo nadyādirūpeṇa jāyata iti adrijāḥ । sarvātmāpi san ṛtam avitathasvabhāva eva । bṛhat mahān , sarvakāraṇatvāt । yadāpyāditya eva mantreṇocyate tadāpyātmasvarūpatvamādityasyāṅgīkṛtamiti brahmaṇi vyākhyāne'pyavirodhaḥ । sarvathāpyeka evātmā jagataḥ, nātmabheda iti mantrārthaḥ ॥
ūrdhvaṁ prāṇamunnayati apānaṁ pratyagasyati ।
madhye vāmanamāsīnaṁ viśve devā upāsate ॥ 3 ॥
ātmanaḥ svarūpādhigame liṅgamucyate — ūrdhvaṁ hṛdayāt prāṇaṁ prāṇavṛttiṁ vāyum unnayati ūrdhvaṁ gamayati । tathā apānaṁ pratyak adhaḥ asyati kṣipati yaḥ iti vākyaśeṣaḥ । taṁ madhye hṛdayapuṇḍarīkākāśe āsīnaṁ buddhāvabhivyaktaṁ vijñānaprakāśanaṁ vāmanaṁ vananīyaṁ sambhajanīyaṁ viśve sarve devāḥ cakṣurādayaḥ prāṇāḥ rūpādivijñānaṁ balimupāharanto viśa iva rājānam upāsate tādarthyenānuparatavyāpārā bhavantītyarthaḥ । yadarthā yatprayuktāśca sarve vāyukaraṇavyāpārāḥ, so'nyaḥ siddha iti vākyārthaḥ ॥
asya visraṁsamānasya śarīrasthasya dehinaḥ ।
dehādvimucyamānasya kimatra pariśiṣyate । etadvai tat ॥ 4 ॥
kiñca, asya śarīrasthasya ātmanaḥ visraṁsamānasya bhraṁśamānasya dehino dehavataḥ । visraṁsanaśabdārthamāha — dehādvimucyamānasyeti । kimatra pariśiṣyate prāṇādikalāpe na kiñcana pariśiṣyate ; atra dehe purasvāmividravaṇa iva puravāsināṁ yasyātmano'pagame kṣaṇamātrātkāryakaraṇakalāparūpaṁ sarvamidaṁ hatabalaṁ vidhvastaṁ bhavati vinaṣṭaṁ bhavati, so'nyaḥ siddha ātmā ॥
na prāṇena nāpānena martyo jīvati kaścana ।
itareṇa tu jīvanti yasminnetāvupāśritau ॥ 5 ॥
syānmataṁ prāṇāpānādyapagamādevedaṁ vidhvastaṁ bhavati na tu vyatiriktātmāpagamāt , prāṇādibhireveha martyo jīvatīti ; naitadasti — na prāṇena nāpānena cakṣurādinā vā martyaḥ manuṣyo dehavān kaścana jīvati na ko'pi jīvati । na hyeṣāṁ parārthānāṁ saṁhatyakāritvājjīvanahetutvamupapadyate । svārthenāsaṁhatena pareṇa saṁhatānāmavasthānaṁ na dṛṣṭaṁ kenacidaprayuktaṁ yathā gṛhādīnāṁ loke ; tathā prāṇādīnāmapi saṁhatatvādbhavitumarhati । ata itareṇa tu itareṇaiva saṁhataprāṇādivilakṣaṇena tu sarve saṁhatāḥ santaḥ jīvanti prāṇāndhārayanti । yasmin saṁhatavilakṣaṇe ātmani sati parasmin etau prāṇāpānau cakṣurādibhiḥ saṁhatau upāśritau yasyāsaṁhatasyārthe prāṇāpānādiḥ sarvaṁ vyāpāraṁ kurvanvartate saṁhataḥ san sa tato'nyaḥ siddha ityabhiprāyaḥ ॥
hanta ta idaṁ pravakṣyāmi guhyaṁ brahma sanātanam ।
yathā ca maraṇaṁ prāpya ātmā bhavati gautama ॥ 6 ॥
hantedānīṁ punarapi te tubhyam idaṁ guhyaṁ gopyaṁ brahma sanātanaṁ cirantanaṁ pravakṣyāmi । yadvijñānātsarvasaṁsāroparamo bhavati, avijñānācca yasya maraṇaṁ prāpya yathā ca ātmā bhavati yathā ātmā saṁsarati tathā śṛṇu he gautama ॥
yonimanye prapadyante śarīratvāya dehinaḥ ।
sthāṇumanye'nusaṁyanti yathākarma yathāśrutam ॥ 7 ॥
yoniṁ yonidvāraṁ śukrabījasamanvitāḥ santaḥ anye kecidavidyāvanto mūḍhāḥ prapadyante śarīratvāya śarīragrahaṇārthaṁ dehinaḥ dehavantaḥ yoniṁ praviśantītyarthaḥ । sthāṇuṁ vṛkṣādisthāvarabhāvam anye atyantādhamā maraṇaṁ prāpya anusaṁyanti anugacchanti । yathākarma yadyasya karma tadyathākarma yairyādṛśaṁ karma iha janmani kṛtaṁ tadvaśenetyetat । tathā yathāśrutaṁ yādṛśaṁ ca vijñānamupārjitaṁ tadanurūpameva śarīraṁ pratipadyanta ityarthaḥ ; ‘yathāprajñaṁ hi sambhavāḥ’ (ai. ā. 2 । 3 । 2) iti śrutyantarāt ॥
ya eṣa supteṣu jāgarti kāmaṁ kāmaṁ puruṣo nirmimāṇaḥ । tadeva śukraṁ tadbrahma tadevāmṛtamucyate ।
tasmiṁllokāḥ śritāḥ sarve tadu nātyeti kaścana । etadvai tat ॥ 8 ॥
yatpratijñātaṁ guhyaṁ brahma pravakṣyāmīti tadāha — ya eṣa supteṣu prāṇādiṣu jāgarti na svapiti ; katham ? kāmaṁ kāmaṁ taṁ tamabhipretaṁ stryādyarthamavidyayā nirmimāṇaḥ niṣpādayan , jāgarti puruṣaḥ yaḥ, tadeva śukraṁ śubhraṁ śuddhaṁ tadbrahma nānyadguhyaṁ brahmāsti । tadeva amṛtam avināśi ucyate sarvaśāstreṣu । kiñca, pṛthivyādayo lokāstasminneva sarve brahmaṇi śritāḥ āśritāḥ, sarvalokakāraṇatvāttasya । tadu nātyeti kaścanetyādi pūrvavadeva ॥
agniryathaiko bhuvanaṁ praviṣṭo rūpaṁ rūpaṁ pratirūpo babhūva ।
ekastathā sarvabhūtāntarātmā rūpaṁ rūpaṁ pratirūpo bahiśca ॥ 9 ॥
ataḥ kutārkikapāṣaṇḍabuddhivicālitāntaḥkaraṇānāṁ pramāṇopapannamapyātmaikatvavijñānamasakṛducyamānamapyanṛjubuddhīnāṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ cetasi nādhīyata iti tatpratipādane ādaravatī punaḥ punarāha śrutiḥ — agniḥ yathā eka eva prakāśātmā san bhuvanam , bhavantyasminbhūtānīti bhuvanam , ayaṁ lokaḥ, tamimaṁ praviṣṭaḥ anupraviṣṭaḥ, rūpaṁ rūpaṁ prati, dārvādidāhyabhedaṁ pratītyarthaḥ, pratirūpaḥ tatra tatra pratirūpavān dāhyabhedena bahuvidho babhūva ; eka eva tathā sarvabhūtāntarātmā rūpaṁ rūpaṁ sarveṣāṁ bhūtānāmabhyantara ātmā atisūkṣmatvāddārvādiṣviva sarvadehaṁ prati praviṣṭatvāt pratirūpo babhūva bahiśca svenāvikṛtena rūpeṇa ākāśavat ॥
vāyuryathaiko bhuvanaṁ praviṣṭo rūpaṁ rūpaṁ pratirūpo babhūva ।
ekastathā sarvabhūtāntarātmā rūpaṁ rūpaṁ pratirūpo bahiśca ॥ 10 ॥
tathānyo dṛṣṭāntaḥ — vāyuryathaika ityādi । prāṇātmanā deheṣvanupraviṣṭaḥ । rūpaṁ rūpaṁ pratirūpo babhūvetyādi samānam ॥
sūryo yathā sarvalokasya cakṣurna lipyate cākṣuṣairbāhyadoṣaiḥ ।
ekastathā sarvabhūtāntarātmā na lipyate lokaduḥkhena bāhyaḥ ॥ 11 ॥
ekasya sarvātmatve saṁsāraduḥkhitvaṁ parasyaiva syāditi prāpte, idamucyate — sūryaḥ yathā cakṣuṣa ālokenopakāraṁ kurvanmūtrapurīṣādyaśuciprakāśanena taddarśinaḥ sarvalokasya cakṣuḥ api san na lipyate cākṣuṣaiḥ aśucyādidarśananimittairādhyātmikaiḥ pāpadoṣaiḥ bāhyaiśca aśucyādisaṁsargadoṣaiḥ ekaḥ san , tathā sarvabhūtāntarātmā na lipyate lokaduḥkhena bāhyaḥ । loko hyavidyayā svātmanyadhyastayā kāmakarmodbhavaṁ duḥkhamanubhavati । na tu sā paramārthataḥ svātmani । yathā rajjuśuktikoṣaragaganeṣu sarparajatodakamalāni na rajjvādīnāṁ svato doṣarūpāṇi santi, saṁsargiṇi viparītabuddhyadhyāsanimittāttu taddoṣavadvibhāvyante ; na taddoṣaisteṣāṁ lepaḥ, viparītabuddhyadhyāsabāhyā hi te ; tathā ātmani sarvo lokaḥ kriyākārakaphalātmakaṁ vijñānaṁ sarpādisthānīyaṁ viparītamadhyasya tannimittaṁ janmamaraṇādiduḥkhamanubhavati ; na tvātmā sarvalokātmāpi san viparītādhyāropanimittena lipyate lokaduḥkhena । kutaḥ ? bāhyaḥ rajjvādivadeva viparītabuddhyadhyāsabāhyo hi sa iti ॥
eko vaśī sarvabhūtāntarātmā ekaṁ rūpaṁ bahudhā yaḥ karoti ।
tamātmasthaṁ ye'nupaśyanti dhīrāsteṣāṁ sukhaṁ śāśvataṁ netareṣām ॥ 12 ॥
kiñca, sa hi parameśvaraḥ sarvagataḥ svatantraḥ ekaḥ, na tatsamo'bhyadhiko vānyo'sti । vaśī, sarvaṁ hyasya jagadvaśe vartate । kutaḥ ? sarvabhūtāntarātmā । yata ekameva sadaikarasamātmānaṁ viśuddhavijñānaghanarūpaṁ nāmarūpādyaśuddhopādhibhedavaśena bahudhā anekaprakāreṇa yaḥ karoti svātmasattāmātreṇa acintyaśaktitvāt , tat ātmasthaṁ svaśarīrahṛdayākāśe buddhau caitanyākāreṇābhivyaktamityetat — na hi śarīrasyādhāratvamātmanaḥ, ākāśavadamūrtatvāt ; ādarśasthaṁ mukhamiti yadvat — tametamīśvaramātmānaṁ ye nivṛttabāhyavṛttayaḥ anupaśyanti ācāryāgamopadeśamanu sākṣādanubhavanti dhīrāḥ vivekinaḥ, teṣāṁ parameśvarabhūtānāṁ śāśvataṁ nityaṁ sukham ātmānandalakṣaṇaṁ bhavati, netareṣāṁ bāhyāsaktabuddhīnāmavivekināṁ svātmabhūtamapi, avidyāvyavadhānāt ॥
nityo nityānāṁ cetanaścetanānāmeko bahūnāṁ yo vidadhāti kāmān ।
tamātmasthaṁ ye'nupaśyanti dhīrāsteṣāṁ śāntiḥ śāśvatī netareṣām ॥ 13 ॥
kiñca, nityaḥ avināśī nityānām avināśinām । cetanaḥ cetanānāṁ cetayitṝṇāṁ brahmādīnāṁ prāṇinām । agninimittamiva dāhakatvamanagnīnāmudakādīnāmātmacaitanyanimittameva cetayitṛtvamanyeṣām । kiñca, sa sarvajñaḥ sarveśvaraḥ kāmināṁ saṁsāriṇāṁ karmānurūpaṁ kāmān karmaphalāni svānugrahanimittāṁśca kāmān yaḥ eko bahūnām anekeṣām anāyāsena vidadhāti prayacchatītyetat । tam ātmasthaṁ ye anupaśyanti dhīrāḥ, teṣāṁ śāntiḥ uparatiḥ śāśvatī nityā svātmabhūtaiva syāt । na itareṣām anevaṁvidhānām ॥
tadetaditi manyante'nirdeśyaṁ paramaṁ sukham ।
kathaṁ nu tadvijānīyāṁ kimu bhāti vibhāti vā ॥ 14 ॥
yattadātmavijñānasukham anirdeśyaṁ nirdeṣṭumaśakyaṁ paramaṁ prakṛṣṭaṁ prākṛtapuruṣavāṅmanasayoragocaramapi sannivṛttaiṣaṇā ye brāhmaṇāste tadetatpratyakṣameveti manyante, kathaṁ nu kena prakāreṇa tatsukhamahaṁ vijānīyām idamityātmabuddhiviṣayamāpādayeyaṁ yathā nivṛttaviṣayaiṣaṇā yatayaḥ । kimu tat bhāti dīpyate prakāśātmakaṁ tat yato'smadbuddhigocaratvena vibhāti vispaṣṭaṁ dṛśyate kiṁ vā neti ॥
na tatra sūryo bhāti na candratārakaṁ nemā vidyuto bhānti kuto'yamagniḥ ।
tameva bhāntamanubhāti sarvaṁ tasya bhāsā sarvamidaṁ vibhāti ॥ 15 ॥
atrottaramidam — bhāti ca vibhāti ceti । katham ? na tatra tasminsvātmabhūte brahmaṇi sarvāvabhāsako'pi sūryaḥ bhāti tadbrahma na prakāśayatītyarthaḥ । tathā na candratārakam , nemā vidyuto bhānti, kutaḥ ayam asmaddṛṣṭigocaraḥ agniḥ । kiṁ bahunā ? yadidamādityādikaṁ bhāti tat tameva parameśvaraṁ bhāntaṁ dīpyamānam anubhāti anudīpyate । yathā jalolmukādi agnisaṁyogādagniṁ dahantamanudahati na svataḥ, tadvat । tasyaiva bhāsā dīptyā sarvamidaṁ sūryādi vibhāti । yat evaṁ tadeva brahma bhāti ca vibhāti ca । kāryagatena vividhena bhāsā tasya brahmaṇo bhārūpatvaṁ svato'vagamyate । na hi svato'vidyamānaṁ bhāsanamanyasya kartuṁ śakyam , ghaṭādīnāmanyāvabhāsakatvādarśanāt bhārūpāṇāṁ ca ādityādīnāṁ taddarśanāt ॥
iti pañcamavallībhāṣyam ॥
ūrdhvamūlo'vākśākha eṣo'śvatthaḥ sanātanaḥ ।
tadeva śukraṁ tadbrahma tadevāmṛtamucyate ।
tasmiṁllokāḥ śritāḥ sarve tadu nātyeti kaścana । etadvai tat ॥ 1 ॥
tūlāvadhāraṇenaiva mūlāvadhāraṇaṁ vṛkṣasya yathā kriyate loke, evaṁ saṁsārakāryavṛkṣāvadhāraṇena tanmūlasya brahmaṇaḥ svarūpāvadidhārayiṣayā iyaṁ ṣaṣṭhī vallī ārabhyate । ūrdhvamūlaḥ ūrdhvaṁ mūlaṁ yat tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padamasyeti so'yamavyaktādisthāvarāntaḥ saṁsāravṛkṣaḥ ūrdhvamūlaḥ । vṛkṣaśca vraścanāt vinaśvaratvāt । avicchinnajanmajarāmaraṇaśokādyanekānarthātmakaḥ pratikṣaṇamanyathāsvabhāvaḥ māyāmarīcyudakagandharvanagarādivaddṛṣṭanaṣṭasvarūpatvādavasāne ca vṛkṣavadabhāvātmakaḥ kadalīstambhavanniḥsāraḥ anekaśatapāṣaṇḍabuddhivikalpāspadaḥ tattvavijijñāsubhiranirdhāritedantattvaḥ vedāntanirdhāritaparabrahmamūlasāraḥ avidyākāmakarmāvyaktabījaprabhavaḥ aparabrahmavijñānakriyāśaktidvayātmakahiraṇyagarbhāṅkuraḥ sarvaprāṇiliṅgabhedaskandhaḥ tattattṛṣṇājalāsekodbhūtadarpaḥ buddhīndriyaviṣayapravālāṅkuraḥ śrutismṛtinyāyavidyopadeśapalāśaḥ yajñadānatapaādyanekakriyāsupuṣpaḥ sukhaduḥkhavedanānekarasaḥ prāṇyupajīvyānantaphalaḥ tattṛṣṇāsalilāvasekaprarūḍhajaṭilīkṛtadṛḍhabaddhamūlaḥ satyanāmādisaptalokabrahmādibhūtapakṣikṛtanīḍaḥ prāṇisukhaduḥkhodbhūtaharṣaśokajātanṛtyagītavāditrakṣvelitāsphoṭitahasitākruṣṭaruditahāhāmuñcamuñcetyādyanekaśabdakṛtatumulībhūtamahāravaḥ vedāntavihitabrahmātmadarśanāsaṅgaśastrakṛtocchedaḥ eṣa saṁsāravṛkṣa aśvatthaḥ aśvatthavatkāmakarmavāteritanityapracalitasvabhāvaḥ । svarganarakatiryakpretādibhiḥ śākhābhiḥ avākśākhaḥ, avāñcaḥ śākhā yasya saḥ, sanātanaḥ anāditvāccirapravṛttaḥ । yadasya saṁsāravṛkṣasya mūlaṁ tadeva śukraṁ śubhraṁ śuddhaṁ jyotiṣmat caitanyātmajyotiḥsvabhāvaṁ tadeva brahma sarvamahattvāt । tadeva amṛtam avināśasvabhāvam ucyate kathyate satyatvāt । vācārambhaṇaṁ vikāro nāmadheyamanṛtamanyadato martyam । tasmin paramārthasatye brahmaṇi lokāḥ gandharvanagaramarīcyudakamāyāsamāḥ paramārthadarśanābhāvāvagamanāḥ śritāḥ āśritāḥ sarve samastāḥ utpattisthitilayeṣu । tadu tadbrahma nātyeti nātivartate mṛdādikamiva ghaṭādikāryaṁ kaścana kaścidapi vikāraḥ । etadvai tat ॥
yadidaṁ kiñca jagatsarvaṁ prāṇa ejati niḥsṛtam ।
mahadbhayaṁ vajramudyataṁ ya etadviduramṛtāste bhavanti ॥ 2 ॥
yadvijñānādamṛtā bhavantītyucyate, jagato mūlaṁ tadeva nāsti brahma ; asata evedaṁ niḥsṛtamiti, tanna — yadidaṁ kiñca yatkiñcedaṁ jagatsarvaṁ prāṇe parasminbrahmaṇi sati ejati kampate, tata eva niḥsṛtaṁ nirgataṁ sat pracalati niyamena ceṣṭate । yadevaṁ jagadutpattyādikāraṇaṁ brahma tat mahadbhayam , mahacca tat bhayaṁ ca bibhetyasmāditi mahadbhayam , vajramudyatam udyatamiva vajram ; yathā vajrodyatakaraṁ svāminam abhimukhībhūtaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhṛtyā niyamena tacchāsane vartante, tathedaṁ candrādityagrahanakṣatratārakādilakṣaṇaṁ jagatseśvaraṁ niyamena kṣaṇamapyaviśrāntaṁ vartata ityuktaṁ bhavati । ye etat viduḥ svātmapravṛttisākṣibhūtamekaṁ brahma amṛtāḥ amaraṇadharmāṇaḥ te bhavanti ॥
bhayādasyāgnistapati bhayāttapati sūryaḥ ।
bhayādindraśca vāyuśca mṛtyurdhāvati pañcamaḥ ॥ 3 ॥
kathaṁ tadbhayājjagadvartata iti, āha — bhayāt bhītyā asya parameśvarasya agniḥ tapati ; bhayāttapati sūryaḥ, bhayādindraśca vāyuśca mṛtyurdhāvati pañcamaḥ । na hi, īśvarāṇāṁ lokapālānāṁ samarthānāṁ satāṁ niyantā cedvajrodyatakaravanna syāt , svāmibhayabhītānāmiva bhṛtyānāṁ niyatā pravṛttirupapadyate ॥
iha cedaśakadboddhuṁ prākśarīrasya visrasaḥ ।
tataḥ sargeṣu lokeṣu śarīratvāya kalpate ॥ 4 ॥
tacca iha jīvanneva cet yadyaśakat śaktaḥ san jānātītyetat , bhayakāraṇaṁ brahma boddhum avagantum , prāk pūrvaṁ śarīrasya visrasaḥ avasraṁsanātpatanāt saṁsārabandhanādvimucyate । na cedaśakadboddhum , tataḥ anavabodhāt sargeṣu, sṛjyante yeṣu sraṣṭavyāḥ prāṇina iti sargāḥ pṛthivyādayo lokāḥ teṣu sargeṣu, lokeṣu śarīratvāya śarīrabhāvāya kalpate samartho bhavati ; śarīraṁ gṛhṇātītyarthaḥ । tasmāccharīravisraṁsanātprāgātmāvabodhāya yatna āstheyaḥ yasmādihaivātmano darśanamādarśasthasyeva mukhasya spaṣṭamupapadyate, na lokāntareṣu brahmalokādanyatra । sa ca duṣprāpaḥ ॥
yathādarśe tathātmani yathā svapne tathā pitṛloke ।
yathāpsu parīva dadṛśe tathā gandharvaloke cchāyātapayoriva brahmaloke ॥ 5 ॥
kathamiti, ucyate — yathā ādarśe pratibimbabhūtamātmānaṁ paśyati lokaḥ atyantaviviktam , tathā iha ātmani svabuddhāvādarśavannirmalībhūtāyāṁ viviktamātmano darśanaṁ bhavatītyarthaḥ । yathā svapne aviviktaṁ jāgradvāsanodbhūtam , tathā pitṛloke aviviktameva darśanamātmanaḥ karmaphalopabhogāsaktatvāt । yathā ca apsu aviviktāvayavamātmasvarūpaṁ parīva dadṛśe paridṛśyata iva, tathā gandharvaloke aviviktameva darśanamātmanaḥ evaṁ ca lokāntareṣvapi śāstraprāmāṇyādavagamyate । chāyātapayoriva atyantaviviktaṁ brahmaloka evaikasmin । sa ca duṣprāpaḥ, atyantaviśiṣṭakarmajñānasādhyatvāt । tasmādātmadarśanāya ihaiva yatnaḥ kartavya ityabhiprāyaḥ ॥
indriyāṇāṁ pṛthagbhāvamudayāstamayau ca yat ।
pṛthagutpadyamānānāṁ matvā dhīro na śocati ॥ 6 ॥
kathamasau boddhavyaḥ, kiṁ vā tadavabodhe prayojanamiti, ucyate — indriyāṇāṁ śrotrādīnāṁ svasvaviṣayagrahaṇaprayojanena svakāraṇebhya ākāśādibhyaḥ pṛthagutpadyamānānām atyantaviśuddhātkevalāccinmātrātmasvarūpāt pṛthagbhāvaṁ svabhāvavilakṣaṇātmakatām , tathā teṣāmevendriyāṇām udayāstamayau ca utpattipralayau jāgratsvapnāvasthāpratipattyā nātmana iti matvā jñātvā vivekato dhīraḥ dhīmān na śocati, ātmano nityaikasvabhāvatvāvyabhicārācchokakāraṇatvānupapatteḥ । tathā ca śrutyantaram
‘tarati śokamātmavit’ (chā. u. 7 । 1 । 3) iti ॥
indriyebhyaḥ paraṁ mano manasaḥ sattvamuttamam ।
sattvādadhi mahānātmā mahato'vyaktamuttamam ॥ 7 ॥
yasmādātmanaḥ indriyāṇāṁ pṛthagbhāva ukto nāsau bahiradhigantavyaḥ yasmātpratyagātmā sa sarvasya ; tatkathamiti, ucyate — indriyebhyaḥ paraṁ mana ityādi । arthānāmihendriyasamānajātīyatvādindriyagrahaṇenaiva grahaṇam । pūrvavadanyat । sattvaśabdādbuddhirihocyate ॥
avyaktāttu paraḥ puruṣo vyāpako'liṅga eva ca ।
yaṁ jñātvā mucyate janturamṛtatvaṁ ca gacchati ॥ 8 ॥
avyaktāttu paraḥ puruṣaḥ vyāpakaḥ, vyāpakasyāpyākāśādeḥ sarvasya kāraṇatvāt । aliṅgaḥ liṅgyate gamyate yena talliṅgaṁ buddhyādi, tadavidyamānaṁ yasya so'yamaliṅgaḥ eva ca ; sarvasaṁsāradharmavarjita ityetat । yaṁ jñātvā ācāryataḥ śāstrataśca mucyate jantuḥ avidyādihṛdayagranthibhirjīvanneva ; patite'pi śarīre amṛtatvaṁ ca gacchati । so'liṅgaḥ paro'vyaktātpuruṣa iti pūrveṇaiva sambandhaḥ ॥
na sandṛśe tiṣṭhati rūpamasya na cakṣuṣā paśyati kaścanainam ।
hṛdā manīṣā manasābhiklṛpto ya etadviduramṛtāste bhavanti ॥ 9 ॥
kathaṁ tarhi tasya aliṅgasya darśanamupapadyata iti, ucyate — na sandṛśe sandarśanaviṣaye na tiṣṭhati pratyagātmanaḥ asya rūpam । ataḥ na cakṣuṣā sarvendriyeṇa, cakṣurgrahaṇasyopalakṣaṇārthatvāt , paśyati nopalabhate kaścana kaścidapi enaṁ prakṛtamātmānam । kathaṁ tarhi taṁ paśyediti, ucyate — hṛdā hṛtsthayā buddhyā, manīṣā manasaḥ saṅkalpādirūpasya īṣṭe niyantṛtveneti manīṭ tayā manīṣā vikalpavarjitayā buddhyā । manasā mananarūpeṇa samyagdarśanena abhiklṛptaḥ abhisamarthitaḥ abhiprakāśita ityetat । ātmā jñātuṁ śakya iti vākyaśeṣaḥ । tamātmānaṁ brahma etat ye viduḥ amṛtāḥ te bhavanti ॥
yadā pañcāvatiṣṭhante jñānāni manasā saha ।
buddhiśca na viceṣṭati tāmāhuḥ paramāṁ gatim ॥ 10 ॥
sā hṛnmanīṭ kathaṁ prāpyata iti tadartho yoga ucyate — yadā yasminkāle svaviṣayebhyo nivartitāni ātmanyeva pañca jñānāni — jñānārthatvācchrotrādīnīndriyāṇi jñānānyucyante — avatiṣṭhante saha manasā yadanugatāni, yena saṅkalpādivyāvṛttenāntaḥkaraṇena । buddhiśca adhyavasāyalakṣaṇā na viceṣṭati svavyāpāreṣu na viceṣṭate na vyāpriyate, tāmāhuḥ paramāṁ gatim ॥
tāṁ yogamiti manyante sthirāmindriyadhāraṇām ।
apramattastadā bhavati yogo hi prabhavāpyayau ॥ 11 ॥
tām īdṛśīṁ tadavasthāṁ yogamiti manyante viyogameva santam । sarvānarthasaṁyogaviyogalakṣaṇā hīyamavasthā yoginaḥ । etasyāṁ hyavasthāyām avidyādhyāropaṇavarjitasvarūpapratiṣṭha ātmā sthirāmindriyadhāraṇāṁ
sthirāmacalāmindriyadhāraṇāṁ bāhyāntaḥkaraṇānāṁ dhāraṇamityarthaḥ । apramattaḥ pramādavarjitaḥ samādhānaṁ prati nityaṁ yatnavān tadā tasminkāle, yadaiva pravṛttayogo bhavatīti sāmarthyādavagamyate । na hi buddhyādiceṣṭābhāve pramādasambhavo'sti । tasmātprāgeva buddhyādiceṣṭoparamāt apramādo vidhīyate । athavā, yadaiva indriyāṇāṁ sthirā dhāraṇā, tadānīmeva niraṅkuśamapramattatvamityato'bhidhīyate apramattastadā bhavatīti । kutaḥ ? yogo hi yasmāt prabhavāpyayau upajanāpāyadharmaka ityarthaḥ । ataḥ apāyaparihārāyāpramādaḥ kartavya ityabhiprāyaḥ ॥
naiva vācā na manasā prāptuṁ śakyo na cakṣuṣā ।
astīti bruvato'nyatra kathaṁ tadupalabhyate ॥ 12 ॥
buddhyādiceṣṭāviṣayaṁ cedbrahma idaṁ taditi viśeṣato gṛhyeta, buddhyādyuparame ca grahaṇakāraṇābhāvādanupalabhyamānaṁ nāstyeva brahma । yaddhi karaṇagocaraṁ tadastīti prasiddhaṁ loke viparītaṁ cāsaditi । ataścānarthako yogo'nupalabhyamānatvādvā nāstītyupalabdhavyaṁ brahmetyevaṁ prāpte, idamucyate । satyam । naiva vācā na manasā na cakṣuṣā nānyairapīndriyaiḥ prāptuṁ śakyate ityarthaḥ । tathāpi sarvaviśeṣarahito'pi jagato mūlamityavagatatvādastyeva, kāryapravilāpanasyāstitvaniṣṭhatvāt । tathā hīdaṁ kāryaṁ saukṣmyatāratamyapāramparyeṇānugamyamānaṁ sadbuddhiniṣṭhāmevāvagamayati । yadāpi viṣayapravilāpanena pravilāpyamānā buddhiḥ, tadāpi sā satpratyayagarbhaiva vilīyate । buddhirhi naḥ pramāṇaṁ sadasatoryāthātmyāvagame । mūlaṁ cejjagato na syādasadanvitamevedaṁ kāryamasadasadityeva gṛhyeta, na tvetadasti ; satsadityeva tu gṛhyate ; yathā mṛdādikāryaṁ ghaṭādi mṛdādyanvitam । tasmājjagato mūlamātmā astītyevopalabdhavyaḥ । kasmāt ? astīti bruvataḥ astitvavādina āgamārthānusāriṇaḥ śraddadhānādanyatra nāstikavādini nāsti jagato mūlamātmā niranvayamevedaṁ kāryamabhāvāntaṁ pravilīyata iti manyamāne viparītadarśini, kathaṁ tadbrahma tattvata upalabhyate ; na kathañcanopalabhyata ityarthaḥ ॥
astītyevopalabdhavyastattvabhāvena cobhayoḥ ।
astītyevopalabdhasya tattvabhāvaḥ prasīdati ॥ 13 ॥
tasmādapohyāsadvādipakṣamāsuram astītyeva ātmā upalabdhavyaḥ satkāryabuddhyādyupādhibhiḥ । yadā tu tadrahito'vikriya ātmā kāryaṁ ca kāraṇavyatirekeṇa nāsti
‘vācārambhaṇaṁ vikāro nāmadheyaṁ mṛttiketyeva satyam’ (chā. u. 6 । 1 । 4) iti śruteḥ, tadā tasya nirupādhikasyāliṅgasya sadasadādipratyayaviṣayatvavarjitasyātmanastattvabhāvo bhavati । tena ca rūpeṇātmopalabdhavya ityanuvartate । tatrāpyubhayoḥ sopādhikanirupādhikayorastitvatattvabhāvayoḥ — nirdhāraṇārthā ṣaṣṭhī — pūrvamastītyevopalabdhasyātmanaḥ satkāryopādhikṛtāstitvapratyayenopalabdhasyetyarthaḥ । paścātpratyastamitasarvopādhirūpa ātmanaḥ tattvabhāvaḥ viditāviditābhyāmanyo'dvayasvabhāvaḥ neti netītyasthūlamanaṇvahrasvamadṛśye'nātmye nirukte'nilayana ityādiśrutinirdiṣṭaḥ prasīdati abhimukhībhavati । ātmaprakāśanāya pūrvamastītyupalabdhavata ityetat ॥
yadā sarve pramucyante kāmā ye'sya hṛdi śritāḥ ।
atha martyo'mṛto bhavatyatra brahma samaśnute ॥ 14 ॥
evaṁ paramārthātmadarśino yadā yasminkāle sarve kāmāḥ kāmayitavyasyānyasyābhāvāt pramucyante viśīryante ; ye asya prākpratibodhādviduṣo hṛdi buddhau śritāḥ āśritāḥ ; buddhirhi kāmānāmāśrayaḥ nātmā,
‘kāmaḥ saṅkalpaḥ’ (bṛ. u. 1 । 5 । 3) ityādiśrutyantarācca ; atha tadā martyaḥ prākprabodhādāsīt sa prabodhottarakālamavidyākāmakarmalakṣaṇasya mṛtyorvināśāt amṛto bhavati gamanaprayojakasya mṛtyorvināśādgamanānupapatteḥ । atra ihaiva pradīpanirvāṇavatsarvabandhanopaśamāt brahma samaśnute brahmaiva bhavatītyarthaḥ ॥
yadā sarve prabhidyante hṛdayasyeha granthayaḥ ।
atha martyo'mṛto bhavatyetāvaddhyanuśāsanam ॥ 15 ॥
kadā punaḥ kāmānāṁ mūlato vināśa iti, ucyate — yadā sarve prabhidyante bhedamupayānti vinaśyanti hṛdayasya buddheriha jīvata eva granthayo granthivaddṛḍhabandhanarūpā avidyāpratyayā ityarthaḥ । ahamidaṁ śarīraṁ mamedaṁ dhanaṁ sukhī duḥkhī cāhamityevamādilakṣaṇāḥ tadviparītāt brahmātmapratyayopajanāt brahmaivāhamasmyasaṁsārīti vinaṣṭeṣvavidyāgranthiṣu tannimittāḥ kāmā mūlato vinaśyanti । atha martyo'mṛto bhavati etāvaddhi etāvadevaitāvanmātraṁ nādhikamastītyāśaṅkā kartavyā । anuśāsanam anuśiṣṭaḥ upadeśaḥ sarvavedāntānāmiti vākyaśeṣaḥ ॥
śataṁ caikā ca hṛdayasya nāḍyastāsāṁ mūrdhānamabhiniḥsṛtaikā ।
tayordhvamāyannamṛtatvameti viṣvaṅṅanyā utkramaṇe bhavanti ॥ 16 ॥
nirastāśeṣaviśeṣavyāpibrahmātmapratipattyā prabhinnasamastāvidyādigrantheḥ jīvata eva brahmabhūtasya viduṣo na gatirvidyate,
‘atra brahma samaśnute’ (ka. u. 2 । 3 । 14) ityuktatvāt
‘na tasya prāṇā utkrāmanti brahmaiva sanbrahmāpyeti’ (bṛ. u. 4 । 4 । 6) iti śrutyantarācca । ye punarmandabrahmavido vidyāntaraśīlinaśca brahmalokabhājaḥ ye ca tadviparītāḥ saṁsārabhājaḥ, teṣāmeṣa gativiśeṣa ucyate prakṛtotkṛṣṭabrahmavidyāphalastutaye । kiñcānyat , agnividyā pṛṣṭā pratyuktā ca । tasyāśca phalaprāptiprakāro vaktavya iti mantrārambhaḥ । tatra — śataṁ ca śatasaṅkhyākāḥ ekā ca suṣumnā nāma puruṣasya hṛdayādviniḥsṛtāḥ nāḍyaḥ sirāḥ ; tāsāṁ madhye mūrdhānaṁ bhittvā abhiniḥsṛtā nirgatā ekā suṣumnā nāma । tayā antakāle hṛdaye ātmānaṁ vaśīkṛtya yojayet । tayā nāḍyā ūrdhvam upari āyan gacchan ādityadvāreṇa amṛtatvam amaraṇadharmatvamāpekṣikam —
‘ābhūtasamplavaṁ sthānamamṛtatvaṁ hi bhāṣyate’ (vi. pu. 2 । 8 । 97) iti smṛteḥ — brahmaṇā vā saha kālāntareṇa mukhyamamṛtatvameti bhuktvā bhogānanupamānbrahmalokagatān । viṣvaṅ nānāgatayaḥ anyā nāḍyaḥ utkramaṇe utkramaṇanimittaṁ bhavanti saṁsārapratipattyarthā eva bhavantītyarthaḥ ॥
aṅguṣṭhamātraḥ puruṣo'ntarātmā sadā janānāṁ hṛdaye saṁniviṣṭaḥ । taṁ svāccharīrātpravṛhenmuñjādiveṣīkāṁ dhairyeṇa ।
taṁ vidyācchukramamṛtaṁ taṁ vidyācchukramamṛtamiti ॥ 17 ॥
idānīṁ sarvavallyarthopasaṁhārārthamāha — aṅguṣṭhamātraḥ puruṣaḥ antarātmā sadā janānāṁ sambandhini hṛdaye saṁniviṣṭaḥ yathāvyākhyātaḥ ; taṁ svāt ātmīyāt śarīrāt pravṛhet udyacchet niṣkarṣet pṛthakkuryādityarthaḥ । kimiveti, ucyate — muñjādiveṣīkām antaḥsthāṁ dhairyeṇa apramādena । taṁ śarīrānniṣkṛṣṭaṁ cinmātraṁ vidyāt vijānīyāt śukraṁ śuddham amṛtaṁ yathoktaṁ brahmeti । dvirvacanamupaniṣatparisamāptyartham , itiśabdaśca ॥
mṛtyuproktāṁ naciketo'tha labdhvā vidyāmetāṁ yogavidhiṁ ca kṛtsnam ।
brahma prāpto virajo'bhūdvimṛtyuranyo'pyevaṁ yo vidadhyātmameva ॥ 18 ॥
vidyāstutyartho'yamākhyāyikārthopasaṁhāraḥ adhunocyate — mṛtyuproktām etāṁ yathoktāṁ brahmavidyāṁ yogavidhiṁ ca kṛtsnaṁ samastaṁ sopakaraṇaṁ saphalamityetat । naciketāḥ atha varapradānānmṛtyoḥ labdhvā prāpyetyarthaḥ । kim ? brahma prāpto'bhūt mukto'bhavadityarthaḥ । katham ? vidyāprāptyā virajaḥ vigatarajāḥ vigatadharmādharmaḥ vimṛtyuḥ vigatakāmāvidyaśca san pūrvamityarthaḥ । na kevalaṁ naciketā eva, anyo'pi ya evaṁ naciketovadātmavit adhyātmameva nirupacaritaṁ pratyaksvarūpaṁ prāpyatattvamevetyabhiprāyaḥ । nānyadrūpamapratyagrūpam । tadevamadhyātmam evam uktena prakāreṇa veda vijānātīti evaṁvit , so'pi virajāḥ san brahma prāpya vimṛtyurbhavatīti vākyaśeṣaḥ ॥
saha nāvavatu । saha nau bhunaktu । saha vīryaṁ karavāvahai । tejasvi nāvadhītamastu mā vidviṣāvahai ॥ 19 ॥
atha śiṣyācāryayoḥ pramādakṛtānyāyena vidyāgrahaṇapratipādananimittadoṣapraśamanārtheyaṁ śāntirucyate — saha nau āvām avatu pālayatu vidyāsvarūpaprakāśanena । kaḥ ? sa eva parameśvaraḥ upaniṣatprakāśitaḥ । kiñca, saha nau bhunaktu tatphalaprakāśanena nau pālayatu । sahaiva āvāṁ vidyākṛtaṁ vīryaṁ sāmarthyaṁ karavāvahai niṣpādayāvahai । kiñca, tejasvinau tejasvinorāvayoḥ yat adhītaṁ tatsvadhītamastu । athavā, tejasvi nau āvābhyāṁ yat adhītaṁ tadatīva tejasvi vīryavadastvityarthaḥ । mā vidviṣāvahai śiṣyācāryāvanyonyaṁ pramādakṛtānyāyādhyayanādhyāpanadoṣanimittaṁ dveṣaṁ mā karavāvahai ityarthaḥ । śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiriti trirvacanaṁ sarvadoṣopaśamanārtham ॥
iti śrīmatparamahaṁsaparivrājakācāryasya śrīgovindabhagavatpūjyapādaśiṣyasya śrīmacchaṅkarabhagavataḥ kṛtau kāṭhakopaniṣadbhāṣyam sampūrṇam ॥
iti ṣaṣṭhī vallī ॥
iti śrīmatparamahaṁsaparivrājakācāryasya śrīgovindabhagavatpūjyapādaśiṣyasya śrīmacchaṅkarabhagavataḥ kṛtau kāṭhakopaniṣadbhāṣye dvitīyo'dhyāyaḥ ॥
