brahmeti hovāca brahmaṇo vā etadvijaye mahīyadhvamiti tato haiva vidāñcakāra brahmeti ॥ 1 ॥
tasmādvā ete devā atitarāmivānyāndevānyadagnirvāyurindraste hyenannediṣṭhaṁ pasparśuste hyenatprathamo vidāñcakāra brahmeti ॥ 2 ॥
tasmādvā indro'titarāmivānyāndevānsa hyenannediṣṭhaṁ pasparśa sa hyenatprathamo vidāñcakāra brahmeti ॥ 3 ॥
tasyaiṣa ādeśo yadetadvidyuto vyadyutadā3 itīnnyamīmiṣadā3 ityadhidaivatam ॥ 4 ॥
tāṁ ca pṛṣṭvā tasyā eva vacanāt vidāñcakāra viditavān । ata indrasya bodhahetutvādvidyaivomā । ‘vidyāsahāyavānīśvaraḥ’ iti smṛtiḥ । yasmādindravijñānapūrvakamagnivāyvindrāste hi enat nediṣṭham atisamīpaṁ brahmavidyayā brahma prāptāḥ santaḥ pasparśuḥ spṛṣṭavantaḥ । te hi enat prathamaḥ prathamaṁ vidāñcakāra vidāñcakrurityetat । tasmāt atitarām atītya atiśayena dīpyante'nyān devān । tato'pīndro'titarāṁ dīpyate, ādau brahmavijñānāt । tasyaiṣa ādeśaḥ tasya brahmaṇa eṣa vakṣyamāṇaḥ ādeśaḥ upāsanopadeśa ityarthaḥ । yasmāddevebhyo vidyudiva sahasaiva prādurbhūtaṁ brahma dyutimat , tasmādvidyuto vidyotanaṁ yathā yadetadbrahma vyadyutat vidyotitavat । ā ityupamārtha ā—śabdaḥ । yathā ghanāndhakāraṁ vidārya vidyutsarvataḥ prakāśate, evaṁ tadbrahma devānāṁ purataḥ sarvataḥprakāśavadvyaktībhūtam । ato vyadyutadivetyupāsyam ।
‘yathā sakṛdvidyutam’ (bṛ. u. 2 । 3 । 6) iti ca vājasaneyake । yasmāccendropasarpaṇakāle nyamīmiṣat — yathā kaściccakṣurnimeṣaṇaṁ kṛtavāniti । itīdityanarthakau nipātau — nimiṣitavadiva tirobhūtamityevamadhidaivataṁ devatāyā adhi yaddarśanamadhidaivataṁ tat ॥
athādhyātmaṁ yadetadgacchatīva ca mano'nena caitadupasmaratyabhīkṣṇaṁ saṅkalpaḥ ॥ 5 ॥
atha anantaram adhyātmam ātmanaḥ adhi ātmaviṣayam adhyātmam ucyata iti vākyaśeṣaḥ । yadetat yathoktalakṣaṇaṁ brahma gacchatīva prāpnotīva viṣayīkarotīvetyarthaḥ । na punarviṣayīkaroti manaḥ, aviṣayatvādbrahmaṇaḥ । ato mano na gacchati ।
‘yenāhurmano matam’ (ke. u. 1 । 5) iti coktam । gacchatīveti tu manaso'pi manastvāt ātmabhūtatvācca brahmaṇaḥ tatsamīpe mano vartate iti upasmarati anena manasaiva tadbrahma vidvānyasmāt , tasmādbrahma gacchatīvetyucyate । abhīkṣṇaṁ punaḥ punaḥ । saṅkalpaḥ brahmapreṣitasya manasaḥ । ata upasmaraṇasaṅkalpādibhirliṅgairbrahma manaādyātmabhūtamityupāsyamityabhiprāyaḥ ॥
taddha tadvanaṁ nāma tadvanamityupāsitavyaṁ sa ya etadevaṁ vedābhi hainaṁ sarvāṇi bhūtāni saṁvāñchanti ॥ 6 ॥
tasya cādhyātmamupāsane guṇo vidhīyate — taddha tadvanaṁ tadetadbrahma tacca tadvanaṁ ca tat parokṣaṁ vanaṁ sambhajanīyam । vanatestatkarmaṇaḥ । tasmāttadvanaṁ nāma । brahmaṇo gauṇaṁ hīdaṁ nāma । tasmādanena guṇena tadvanamityupāsitavyam । sa yaḥ kaścidetadyathoktamevaṁ yathoktena guṇena vanamityanena nāmnābhidheyaṁ brahma veda upāste tasyaitatphalamucyate — sarvāṇi bhūtāni enam upāsakam abhisaṁvāñchanti ihābhisambhajante sevaṁte smetyarthaḥ । yathāguṇopāsanaṁ hi phalam ।
upaniṣadaṁ bho brūhītyuktā ta upaniṣadbrāhmīṁ vāva ta upaniṣadamabrūmeti ॥ 7 ॥
upaniṣadaṁ bho brūhītyuktāyāmupaniṣadi śiṣyeṇokta ācārya āha — uktā kathitā te tubhyam upaniṣadātmopāsanam । adhunā brāhmīṁ vāva te tubhyaṁ brahmaṇo brāhmaṇajāteḥ upaniṣadam abrūma vakṣyāma ityarthaḥ । vakṣyati hi । brāhmī noktā । uktā tvātmopaniṣat । tasmānna bhūtābhiprāyo'brūmetyayaṁ śabdaḥ ॥
tasyai tapo damaḥ karmeti pratiṣṭhā vedāḥ sarvāṅgāni satyamāyatanam ॥ 8 ॥
tasyai tasyā vakṣyamāṇāyā upaniṣadaḥ tapaḥ brahmacaryādi damaḥ upaśamaḥ karma agnihotrādi ityetāni pratiṣṭhā āśrayaḥ । eteṣu hi satsu brāhmyupaniṣatpratiṣṭhitā bhavati । vedāḥ catvāraḥ aṅgāni ca sarvāṇi । pratiṣṭhetyanuvartate । brahmāśrayā hi vidyā । satyaṁ yathābhūtavacanamapīḍākaram āyatanaṁ nivāsaḥ । satyavatsu hi sarvaṁ yathoktamāyatana ivāvasthitam ॥
yo vā etāmevaṁ vedāpahatya pāpmānamanante svarge loke jyeye pratitiṣṭhati pratitiṣṭhati ॥ 9 ॥
tāmetāṁ tapaādyaṅgāṁ tatpratiṣṭhāṁ brāhmīmupaniṣadaṁ sāyatanāmātmajñānahetubhūtām evaṁ yathāvat yo veda anuvartate anutiṣṭhati, tasyaitatphalamāha — apahatya pāpmānam apakṣayya dharmādharmāvityarthaḥ । anante apāre avidyamānānte svarge loke sukhaprāye nirduḥkhātmani pare brahmaṇi jyeye mahati sarvamahattare pratitiṣṭhati sarvavedāntavedyaṁ brahma ātmatvenāvagamya tadeva brahma pratipadyata ityarthaḥ ॥
