maghavanmartyaṁ vā idaꣳ śarīramāttaṁ mṛtyunā tadasyāmṛtasyāśarīrasyātmano'dhiṣṭhānamātto vai saśarīraḥ priyāpriyābhyāṁ na vai saśarīrasya sataḥ priyāpriyayorapahatirastyaśarīraṁ vāva santaṁ na priyāpriye spṛśataḥ ॥ 1 ॥
maghavan martyaṁ vai maraṇadharmīdaṁ śarīram । yanmanyase'kṣyādhārādilakṣaṇaḥ samprasādalakṣaṇa ātmā mayokto vināśamevāpīto bhavatīti, śṛṇu tatra kāraṇam — yadidaṁ śarīraṁ vai yatpaśyasi tadetat martyaṁ vināśi । tacca āttaṁ mṛtyunā grastaṁ satatameva । kadācideva mriyata iti martyamityukte na tathā santrāso bhavati, yathā grastameva sadā vyāptameva mṛtyunetyukte — iti vairāgyārthaṁ viśeṣa ityucyate — āttaṁ mṛtyuneti । kathaṁ nāma dehābhimānato viraktaḥ san nivartata iti । śarīramityatra sahendriyamanobhirucyate । taccharīramasya samprasādasya tristhānatayā gamyamānasya amṛtasya maraṇādidehendriyamanodharmavarjitasyetyetat ; amṛtasyetyanenaiva aśarīratve siddhe punaraśarīrasyeti vacanaṁ vāyvādivat sāvayavatvamūrtimattve mā bhūtāmiti ; ātmano bhogādhiṣṭhānam ; ātmano vā sata īkṣituḥ tejobannādikrameṇa utpannamadhiṣṭhānam ; jīva rūpeṇa praviśya sadevādhitiṣṭhatyasminniti vā adhiṣṭhānam । yasyedamīdṛśaṁ nityameva mṛtyugrastaṁ dharmādharmajanitatvātpriyavadadhiṣṭhānam , tadadhiṣṭhitaḥ tadvān saśarīro bhavati । aśarīrasvabhāvasya ātmanaḥ tadevāhaṁ śarīraṁ śarīrameva ca aham — ityavivekādātmabhāvaḥ saśarīratvam ; ata eva saśarīraḥ san āttaḥ grastaḥ priyāpriyābhyām । prasiddhametat । tasya ca na vai saśarīrasya sataḥ priyāpriyayoḥ bāhyaviṣayasaṁyogaviyoganimittayoḥ bāhyaviṣayasaṁyogaviyogau mameti manyamānasya apahatiḥ vināśaḥ ucchedaḥ santatirūpayornāstīti । taṁ punardehābhimānādaśarīrasvarūpavijñānena nivartitāvivekajñānamaśarīraṁ santaṁ priyāpriye na spṛśataḥ । spṛśiḥ pratyekaṁ sambadhyata iti priyaṁ na spṛśati apriyaṁ na spṛśatīti vākyadvayaṁ bhavati । ‘na mlecchāśucyadhārmikaiḥ saha sambhāṣeta’ (gau. dha. 1 । 9 । 17) iti yadvat । dharmādharmakārye hi te ; aśarīratā tu svarūpamiti tatra dharmādharmayorasambhavāt tatkāryabhāvo dūrata evetyato na priyāpriye spṛśataḥ ॥
nanu yadi priyamapyaśarīraṁ na spṛśatīti, yanmaghavatoktaṁ suṣuptastho vināśamevāpīto bhavatīti, tadevehāpyāpannam । naiṣa doṣaḥ, dharmādharmakāryayoḥ śarīrasambandhinoḥ priyāpriyayoḥ pratiṣedhasya vivakṣitatvāt — aśarīraṁ na priyāpriye spṛśata iti । āgamāpāyinorhi sparśaśabdo dṛṣṭaḥ — yathā śītasparśa uṣṇasparśa iti, na tvagneruṣṇaprakāśayoḥ svabhāvabhūtayoragninā sparśa iti bhavati ; tathā agneḥ saviturvā uṣṇaprakāśavat svarūpabhūtasya ānandasya priyasyāpi neha pratiṣedhaḥ,
‘vijñānamānandaṁ brahma’ (bṛ. u. 3 । 9 । 28) ‘ānando brahma’ (tai. u. 3 । 6 । 1) ityādiśrutibhyaḥ । ihāpi bhūmaiva sukhamityuktatvāt । nanu bhūmnaḥ priyasya ekatve asaṁvedyatvāt svarūpeṇaiva vā nityasaṁvedyatvāt nirviśeṣateti na indrasya tadiṣṭam ,
‘nāha khalvayaṁ saṁpratyātmānaṁ jānātyayamahamasmīti no evemāni bhūtāni vināśamevāpīto bhavati nāhamatra bhogyaṁ paśyāmi’ (chā. u. 7 । 11 । 2) ityuktatvāt । taddhi indrasyeṣṭam — yadbhūtāni ca ātmānaṁ ca jānāti, na ca apriyaṁ kiñcidvetti, sa sarvāṁśca lokānāpnoti sarvāṁśca kāmān yena jñānena । satyametadiṣṭamindrasya — imāni bhūtāni matto'nyāni, lokāḥ kāmāśca sarve matto anye, ahameṣāṁ svāmīti । na tvetadindrasya hitam । hitaṁ ca indrasya prajāpatinā vaktavyam । vyomavadaśarīrātmatayā sarvabhūtalokakāmātmatvopagamena yā prāptiḥ, taddhitamindrāya vaktavyamiti prajāpatinā abhipretam । na tu rājño rājyāptivadanyatvena । tatraivaṁ sati kaṁ kena vijānīyādātmaikatve imāni bhūtānyayamahamasmīti । nanvasminpakṣe
‘strībhirvā yānairvā’ (chā. u. 8 । 12 । 3) ‘sa yadi pitṛlokakāmaḥ’ (chā. u. 8 । 2 । 1) ‘sa ekadhā bhavati’ (chā. u. 7 । 26 । 2) ityādyaiśvaryaśrutayo'nupapannāḥ ; na, sarvātmanaḥ sarvaphalasambandhopapatteravirodhāt — mṛda iva sarvaghaṭakarakakuṇḍādyāptiḥ । nanu sarvātmatve duḥkhasambandho'pi syāditi cet , na, duḥkhasyāpyātmatvopagamādavirodhaḥ । ātmanyavidyākalpanānimittāni duḥkhāni — rajjvāmiva sarpādikalpanānimittāni । sā ca avidyā aśarīrātmaikatvasvarūpadarśanena duḥkhanimittā ucchinneti duḥkhasambandhāśaṅkā na sambhavati । śuddhasattvasaṅkalpanimittānāṁ tu kāmānām īśvaradehasambandhaḥ sarvabhūteṣu mānasānām । para eva sarvasattvopādhidvāreṇa bhokteti sarvāvidyākṛtasaṁvyavahārāṇāṁ para eva ātmā āspadaṁ nānyo'stīti vedāntasiddhāntaḥ ॥
‘ya eṣo'kṣiṇi puruṣo dṛśyate’ iti cchāyāpuruṣa eva prajāpatinā uktaḥ, svapnasuṣuptayośca anya eva, na paro'pahatapāpmatvādilakṣaṇaḥ, virodhāt iti kecinmanyante । chāyādyātmanāṁ ca upadeśe prayojanamācakṣate । ādāveva ucyamāne kila durvijñeyatvātparasya ātmanaḥ atyantabāhyaviṣayāsaktacetasaḥ atyantasūkṣmavastuśravaṇe vyāmoho mā bhūditi । yathā kila dvitīyāyāṁ sūkṣmaṁ candraṁ didarśayiṣuḥ vṛkṣaṁ kañcitpratyakṣamādau darśayati — paśya amumeṣa candra iti, tato'nyaṁ tato'pyanyaṁ girimūrdhānaṁ ca candrasamīpastham — eṣa candra iti, tato'sau candraṁ paśyati, evametat ‘ya eṣo'kṣiṇi’ ityādyuktaṁ prajāpatinā tribhiḥ paryāyaiḥ, na para iti । caturthe tu paryāye dehānmartyātsamutthāya aśarīratāmāpanno jyotiḥsvarūpam । yasminnuttamapuruṣe strayādibhirjakṣatkrīḍan ramamāṇo bhavati, sa uttamaḥ puruṣaḥ para ukta iti ca āhuḥ । satyam , ramaṇīyā tāvadiyaṁ vyākhyā śrotum । na tu artho'sya granthasya evaṁ sambhavati । katham ? ‘akṣiṇi puruṣo dṛśyate’ ityupanyasya śiṣyābhyāṁ chāyātmani gṛhīte tayostadviparītagrahaṇaṁ matvā tadapanayāya udaśarāvopanyāsaḥ
‘kiṁ paśyathaḥ’ (chā. u. 8 । 8 । 1) iti ca praśnaḥ sādhvalaṅkāropadeśaśca anarthakaḥ syāt , yadi chāyātmaiva prajāpatinā ‘akṣiṇi dṛśyate’ ityupadiṣṭaḥ । kiñca yadi svayamupadiṣṭa iti grahaṇasyāpyapanayanakāraṇaṁ vaktavyaṁ syāt । svapnasuṣuptātmagrahaṇayorapi tadapanayakāraṇaṁ ca svayaṁ brūyāt । na ca uktam । tena manyāmahe na akṣiṇi cchāyātmā prajāpatinā upadiṣṭaḥ । kiṁ cānyat , akṣiṇi draṣṭā cet ‘dṛśyate’ ityupadiṣṭaḥ syāt , tata idaṁ yuktam । ‘etaṁ tveva te’ ityuktvā svapne'pi draṣṭurevopadeśaḥ । svapne na draṣṭopadiṣṭa iti cet , na, ‘api roditīva’ ‘apriyavetteva’ ityupadeśāt । na ca draṣṭuranyaḥ kaścitsvapne mahīyamānaścarati ।
‘atrāyaṁ puruṣaḥ svayañjyotiḥ’ (bṛ. u. 4 । 3 । 9) iti nyāyataḥ śrutyantare siddhatvāt । yadyapi svapne sadhīrbhavati, tathāpi na dhīḥ svapnabhogopalabdhiṁ prati karaṇatvaṁ bhajate । kiṁ tarhi, paṭacitravajjāgradvāsanāśrayā dṛśyaiva dhīrbhavatīti na draṣṭuḥ svayañjyotiṣṭvabādhaḥ syāt । kiñcānyat , jāgratsvapnayorbhūtāni ca ātmānaṁ ca jānāti — imāni bhūtānyayamahamasmīti । prāptau satyāṁ pratiṣedho yuktaḥ syāt — nāha khalvayamityādi । tathā cetanasyaiva avidyānimittayoḥ saśarīratve sati priyāpriyayorapahatirnāstītyuktvā tasyaivāśarīrasya sato vidyāyāṁ satyāṁ saśarīratve prāptayoḥ pratiṣedho yuktaḥ
‘aśarīraṁ vāva santaṁ na priyāpriye spṛśataḥ’ (chā. u. 8 । 12 । 1) iti । ekaścātmā svapnabudvāntayormahāmatsyavadasaṅgaḥ sañcaratīti śrutyantare siddham । yaccoktaṁ samprasādaḥ śarīrātsamutthāya yasminstryādibhiḥ ramamāṇo bhavati so'nyaḥ samprasādādadhikaraṇanirdiṣṭa uttamaḥ puruṣa iti, tadapyasat । caturthe'pi paryāye ‘etaṁ tveva te’ iti vacanāt । yadi tato'nyo'bhipretaḥ syāt , pūrvavat ‘etaṁ tveva te’ iti na brūyānmṛṣā prajāpatiḥ । kiñcānyat , tejobannādīnāṁ sraṣṭuḥ sataḥ svavikāradehaśuṅge praveśaṁ darśayitvā praviṣṭāya punaḥ tattvamasītyupadeśaḥ mṛṣā prasajyeta । tasmiṁstvaṁ stryādibhiḥ rantā bhaviṣyasīti yukta upadeśo'bhaviṣyat yadi samprasādādanya uttamaḥ puruṣo bhavet । tathā bhūmni
‘ahameva’ (chā. u. 7 । 25 । 2) ityādiśya ‘ātmaivedaṁ sarvam’ iti nopasamahariṣyat , yadi bhūmā jīvādanyo'bhaviṣyat ,
‘nānyo'to'sti draṣṭā’ (bṛ. u. 3 । 7 । 23) ityādiśrutyantarācca । sarvaśrutiṣu ca parasminnātmaśabdaprayogo nābhaviṣyat pratyagātmā cetsarvajantūnāṁ para ātmā na bhavet । tasmādeka eva ātmā prakaraṇī siddhaḥ ॥
na ca ātmanaḥ saṁsāritvam , avidyādhyastatvādātmani saṁsārasya । na hi rajjuśuktikāgaganādiṣu sarparajatamalādīni mithyājñānādhyastāni teṣāṁ bhavantīti । etena saśarīrasya priyāpriyayorapahatirnāstīti vyākhyātam । yacca sthitamapriyavetteveti nāpriyavettaiveti siddham । evaṁ ca sati sarvaparyāyeṣu ‘etadamṛtamabhayametadbrahma’ iti prajāpatervacanam , yadi vā prajāpaticchadmarūpāyāḥ śrutervacanam , satyameva bhavet । na ca tatkutarkabuddhyā mṛṣā kartuṁ yuktam , tato gurutarasya pramāṇāntarasyānupapatteḥ । nanu pratyakṣaṁ duḥkhādyapriyavettṛtvamavyabhicāryanubhūyata iti cet , na, jarādirahito jīrṇo'haṁ jāto'hamāyuṣmāngauraḥ kṛṣṇo mṛtaḥ — ityādipratyakṣānubhavavattadupapatteḥ । sarvamapyetatsatyamiti cet , astyevaitadevaṁ duravagamam , yena devarājo'pyudaśarāvādidarśitāvināśayuktirapi mumohaivātra ‘vināśamevāpīto bhavati’ iti । tathā virocano mahāprājñaḥ prājāpatyo'pi dehamātrātmadarśano babhūva । tathā indrasya ātmavināśabhayasāgare eva vaināśikā nyamajjan । tathā sāṅkhyā draṣṭāraṁ dehādivyatiriktamavagamyāpi tyaktāgamapramāṇatvāt mṛtyuviṣaye eva anyatvadarśane tasthuḥ । tathā anye kāṇādādidarśanāḥ kaṣāyaraktamiva kṣārādibhirvastraṁ navabhirātmaguṇairyuktamātmadravyaṁ viśodhayituṁ pravṛttāḥ । tathā anye karmiṇo bāhyaviṣayāpahṛtacetasaḥ vedapramāṇā api paramārthasatyamātmaikatvaṁ savināśamiva indravanmanyamānā ghaṭīyantravat ārohāvarohaprakārairaniśaṁ bambhramanti ; kimanye kṣudrajantavo vivekahīnāḥ svabhāvata eva bahirviṣayāpahṛtacetasaḥ । tasmādidaṁ tyaktasarvabāhyaiṣaṇaiḥ ananyaśaraṇaiḥ paramahaṁsaparivrājakaiḥ atyāśramibhirvedāntavijñānaparaireva vedanīyaṁ pūjyatamaiḥ prājāpatyaṁ ca imaṁ sampradāyamanusaradbhiḥ upanibaddhaṁ prakaraṇacatuṣṭayena । tathā anuśāsati adyāpi ‘ta eva nānye’ iti ॥
aśarīro vāyurabhraṁ vidyutstanayitnuraśarīrāṇyetāni tadyathaitānyamuṣmādākāśātsamutthāya paraṁ jyotirupasampadya svena rūpeṇābhiniṣpadyante ॥ 2 ॥
tatra aśarīrasya samprasādasya avidyayā śarīreṇāviśeṣatāṁ saśarīratāmeva samprāptasya śarīrātsamutthāya svena rūpeṇa yathā abhiniṣpattiḥ, tathā vaktavyeti dṛṣṭānta ucyate — aśarīro vāyuḥ avidyamānaṁ śiraḥpāṇyādimaccharīramasyetyaśarīraḥ । kiṁ ca abhraṁ vidyutstanayitnurityetāni ca aśarīrāṇi । tat tatraivaṁ sati varṣādiprayojanāvasāne yathā, amuṣmāditi bhūmiṣṭhā śrutiḥ dyulokasambandhinamākāśadeśaṁ vyapadiśati, etāni yathoktānyākāśasamānarūpatāmāpannāni svena vāyvādirūpeṇāgṛhyamāṇāni ākāśākhyatāṁ gatāni — yathā samprasādaḥ avidyāvasthāyāṁ śarīrātmabhāvameva āpannaḥ, tāni ca tathābhūtānyamuṣmāt dyulokasambandhina ākāśadeśātsamuttiṣṭanti varṣaṇādiprayojanābhinirvṛttaye । katham ? śiśirāpāye sāvitraṁ paraṁ jyotiḥ prakṛṣṭaṁ graiṣmakamupasampadya sāvitramabhitāpaṁ prāpyetyathaḥ । ādityābhitāpena pṛthagbhāvamāpāditāḥ santaḥ svena svena rūpeṇa purovātādivāyurūpeṇa stimitabhāvaṁ hitvā abhramapi bhūmiparvatahastyādirūpeṇa vidyudapi svena jyotirlatādicapalarūpeṇa stanayitnurapi svena garjitāśanirūpeṇetyevaṁ prāvṛḍāgame svena svena rūpeṇābhiniṣpadyante ॥
evamevaiṣa samprasādo'smāccharīrātsamutthāya paraṁ jyotirupasampadya svena rūpeṇābhiniṣpadyate sa uttamapuruṣaḥ sa tatra paryeti jakṣatkrīḍan ramamāṇaḥ strībhirvā yānairvā jñātibhirvā nopajanaꣳ smarannidaꣳ śarīraꣳ sa yathā prayogya ācaraṇe yukta evamevāyamasmiñcharīre prāṇo yuktaḥ ॥ 3 ॥
yathā ayaṁ dṛṣṭānto vāyvādīnāmākāśādisāmyagamanavadavidyayā saṁsārāvasthāyāṁ śarīrasāmyamāpannaḥ ahamamuṣya putro jāto jīrṇo mariṣye — ityevaṁprakāraṁ prajāpatineva maghavān yathoktena krameṇa nāsi tvaṁ dehendriyādidharmā tattvamasīti pratibodhitaḥ san sa eṣa samprasādo jīvo'smāccharīrādākāśādiva vāyvādayaḥ samutthāya dehādivilakṣaṇamātmano rūpamavagamya dehātmabhāvanāṁ hitvetyetat , svena rūpeṇa sadātmanaivābhiniṣpadyata iti vyākhyātaṁ purastāt । sa yena svena rūpeṇa samprasādo'bhiniṣpadyate — prākpratibodhāt tadbhrāntinimittātsarpo bhavati yathā rajjuḥ, paścātkṛtaprakāśā rajjvātmanā svena rūpeṇābhiniṣpadyate, evaṁ ca sa uttamapuruṣaḥ uttamaścāsau puruṣaścetyuttamapuruṣaḥ sa eva uttamapuruṣaḥ । akṣisvapnapuruṣau vyaktau avyaktaśca suṣuptaḥ samastaḥ samprasannaḥ aśarīraśca svena rūpeṇeti । eṣāmeva svena rūpeṇāvasthitaḥ kṣarākṣarau vyākṛtāvyākṛtāvapekṣya uttamapuruṣaḥ ; kṛtanirvacano hi ayaṁ gītāsu । saḥ samprasādaḥ svena rūpeṇa tatra svātmani svasthatayā sarvātmabhūtaḥ paryeti kvacidindrādyātmanā jakṣat hasan bhakṣayan vā bhakṣyān uccāvacān īpsitān kvacinmanomātraiḥ saṅkalpādeva samutthitairbrāhmalaukikairvā krīḍan stryādibhiḥ ramamāṇaśca manasaiva, nopajanam , strīpuṁsayoranyonyopagamena jāyata ityupajanam ātmabhāvena vā ātmasāmīpyena jāyata ityupajanamidaṁ śarīram , tanna smaran । tatsmaraṇe hi duḥkhameva syāt , duḥkhātmakatvāt tasya । nanvanubhūtaṁ cet na smaret asarvajñatvaṁ muktasya ; naiṣa doṣaḥ । yena mithyājñānādinā janitam tacca mithyājñānādi vidyayā uccheditam , atastannānubhūtameveti na tadasmaraṇe sarvajñatvahāniḥ । na hi unmattena grahagṛhītena vā yadanubhūtaṁ tadunmādādyapagame'pi smartavyaṁ syāt ; tathehāpi saṁsāribhiravidyādoṣavadbhiḥ yadanubhūyate tatsarvātmānamaśarīraṁ na spṛśati, avidyānimittābhāvāt । ye tu ucchinnadoṣairmṛditakaṣāyaiḥ mānasāḥ satyāḥ kāmā anṛtāpidhānā anubhūyante vidyābhivyaṅgyatvāt , ta eva muktena sarvātmabhūtena sambadhyanta iti ātmajñānastutaye nirdiśyante ; ataḥ sādhvetadviśinaṣṭi —
‘ya ete brahmaloke’ (chā. u. 8 । 12 । 5) iti । yatra kvacana bhavanto'pi brahmaṇyeva hi te loke bhavantīti sarvātmatvādbrahmaṇa ucyante ॥
nanu kathamekaḥ san nānyatpaśyati nānyacchṛṇoti nānyadvijānāti sa bhūmā kāmāṁśca brāhmalaukikānpaśyanramate iti ca viruddham , yathā eko yasminneva kṣaṇe paśyati sa tasminneva kṣaṇe na paśyati ca iti । naiṣa doṣaḥ, śrutyantare parihṛtatvāt । draṣṭurdṛṣṭeraviparilopātpaśyanneva bhavati ; draṣṭuranyatvena kāmānāmabhāvānna paśyati ca iti । yadyapi suṣupte taduktam , muktasyāpi sarvaikatvātsamāno dvitīyābhāvaḥ ।
‘kena kaṁ paśyet’ (bṛ. u. 2 । 4 । 14) iti ca uktameva । aśarīrasvarūpo'pahatapāpmādilakṣaṇaḥ san kathameṣa puruṣo'kṣiṇi dṛśyata ityuktaḥ prajāpatinā ? tatra yathā asāvakṣiṇi sākṣāddṛśyate tadvaktavyamitīdamārabhyate । tatra ko heturakṣiṇi darśane iti, āha — sa dṛṣṭāntaḥ yathā prayogyaḥ, prayogyaparo vā sa-śabdaḥ, prayujyata iti prayogaḥ, aśvo balīvardo vā yathā loke ācaratyanenetyācaraṇaḥ rathaḥ ano vā tasminnācaraṇe yuktaḥ tadākarṣaṇāya, evamasmiñcharīre rathasthānīye prāṇaḥ pañcavṛttirindriyamanobuddhisaṁyuktaḥ prajñātmā vijñānakriyāśaktidvayasaṁmūrchitātmā yuktaḥ svakarmaphalopabhoganimittaṁ niyuktaḥ,
‘kasminnvahamutkrānte utkrānto bhaviṣyāmi kasminvā pratiṣṭhite pratiṣṭhāsyāmīti’ (pra. u. 6 । 3) īśvareṇa rājñeva sarvādhikārī darśanaśravaṇaceṣṭāvyāpāre'dhikṛtaḥ । tasyaiva tu mātrā ekadeśaścakṣurindriyaṁ rūpopalabdhidvārabhūtam ॥
atha yatraitadākāśamanuviṣaṇṇaṁ cakṣuḥ sa cākṣuṣaḥ puruṣo darśanāya cakṣuratha yo vededaṁ jighrāṇīti sa ātmā gandhāya ghrāṇamatha yo vededamabhivyāharāṇīti sa ātmābhivyāhārāya vāgatha yo vededaṁ śṛṇavānīti sa ātmā śravaṇāya śrotram ॥ 4 ॥
atha yatra kṛṣṇatāropalakṣitam ākāśaṁ dehacchidram anuviṣaṇṇam anuṣaktam anugatam , tatra sa prakṛtaḥ aśarīra ātmā cākṣuṣaḥ cakṣuṣi bhava iti cākṣuṣaḥ tasya darśanāya rūpopalabdhaye cakṣuḥ karaṇam ; yasya tat dehādibhiḥ saṁhatatvāt parasya draṣṭurarthe, so'tra cakṣuṣi darśanena liṅgena dṛśyate paraḥ aśarīro'saṁhataḥ । ‘akṣiṇi dṛśyate’ iti prajāpatinoktaṁ sarvendriyadvāropalakṣaṇārtham ; sarvaviṣayopalabdhā hi sa eveti । sphuṭopalabdhihetutvāttu ‘akṣiṇi’ iti viśeṣavacanaṁ sarvaśrutiṣu । ‘ahamadarśamiti tatsatyaṁ bhavati’ iti ca śruteḥ । athāpi yo'smindehe veda ; katham ? idaṁ sugandhi durgandhi vā jighrāṇīti asya gandhaṁ vijānīyāmiti, sa ātmā, tasya gandhāya gandhavijñānāya ghrāṇam । atha yo veda idaṁ vacanam abhivyāharāṇīti vadiṣyāmīti, sa ātmā, abhivyāharaṇakriyāsiddhaye karaṇaṁ vāgindriyam । atha yo veda — idaṁ śṛṇavānīti, sa ātmā, śravaṇāya śrotram ॥
atha yo vededaṁ manvānīti sa ātmā mano'sya daivaṁ cakṣuḥ sa vā eṣa etena daivena cakṣuṣā manasaitānkāmānpaśyanramate ya ete brahmaloke ॥ 5 ॥
atha yo veda — idaṁ manvānīti mananavyāpāramindriyāsaṁspṛṣṭaṁ kevalaṁ manvānīti veda, sa ātmā, mananāya manaḥ । yo veda sa ātmetyevaṁ sarvatra prayogāt vedanamasya svarūpamityavagamyate — yathā yaḥ purastātprakāśayati sa ādityaḥ, yo dakṣiṇataḥ yaḥ paścāt uttarato ya ūrdhvaṁ prakāśayati sa ādityaḥ — ityukte prakāśasvarūpaḥ sa iti gamyate । darśanādikriyānirvṛttyarthāni tu cakṣurādikaraṇāni । idaṁ ca asya ātmanaḥ sāmarthyādavagamyate — ātmanaḥ sattāmātra eva jñānakartṛtvam , na tu vyāpṛtatayā — yathā savituḥ sattāmātra eva prakāśanakartṛtvam , na tu vyāpṛtatayeti — tadvat । mano'sya ātmano daivamaprākṛtam itarendriyairasādhāraṇaṁ cakṣuḥ caṣṭe paśyatyaneneti cakṣuḥ । vartamānakālaviṣayāṇi ca indriyāṇi ato adaivāni tāni । manastu trikālaviṣayopalabdhikaraṇaṁ mṛditadoṣaṁ ca sūkṣmavyavahitādisarvopalabdhikaraṇaṁ ca iti daivaṁ cakṣurucyate । sa vai muktaḥ svarūpāpannaḥ avidyākṛtadehendriyamanoviyuktaḥ sarvātmabhāvamāpannaḥ san eṣa vyomavadviśuddhaḥ sarveśvaro manaupādhiḥ san etenaiveśvareṇa manasā etānkāmān savitṛprakāśavat nityapratatena darśanena paśyan ramate । kānkāmāniti viśinaṣṭi — ya ete brahmaṇi loke hiraṇyanidhivat bāhyaviṣayāsaṅgānṛtenāpihitāḥ saṅkalpamātralabhyāḥ tānityarthaḥ ॥
taṁ vā etaṁ devā ātmānamupāsate tasmātteṣāꣳ sarveca lokā āttāḥ sarve ca kāmāḥ sa sarvāꣳśca lokānāpnoti sarvāꣳśca kāmānyastamātmānamanuvidya vijānātīti ha prajāpatiruvāca prajāpatiruvāca ॥ 6 ॥
yasmādeṣa indrāya prajāpatinokta ātmā, tasmāt tataḥ śrutvā tamātmānamadyatve'pi devā upāsate । tadupāsanācca teṣāṁ sarve ca lokā āttāḥ prāptāḥ sarve ca kāmāḥ । yadarthaṁ hi indraḥ ekaśataṁ varṣāṇi prajāpatau brahmacaryamuvāsa, tatphalaṁ prāptaṁ devairityabhiprāyaḥ । tadyuktaṁ devānāṁ mahābhāgyatvāt , na tvidānīṁ manuṣyāṇāmalpajīvitatvānmandataraprajñatvācca sambhavatīti prāpte, idamucyate — sa sarvāṁśca lokānāpnoti sarvāṁśca kāmān idānīntano'pi । ko'sau ? indrādivat yaḥ tamātmānamanuvidya vijānātīti ha sāmānyena kila prajāpatiruvāca । ataḥ sarveṣāmātmajñānaṁ tatphalaprāptiśca tulyaiva bhavatītyarthaḥ । dvirvacanaṁ prakaraṇasamāptyartham ॥
